Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Horton.
Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always been involved in music, starting in church choirs, high school band, and taking up guitar and folk music in my final years of high school. Moving to east Tennessee for school at Maryville College, I was drawn to the coffeehouse scene and by the early ’70s was playing regularly on Cumberland Ave. in Knoxville on the University of Tennessee campus.. A friend of mine once described himself as a music enthusiast and I have adopted that approach..
As a musician, I am a founding member of Lonesome Coyotes, a country swing band with rock and blues influences that played in the ’70s and ’80s and then had a later run from 2002-2019. Also a founding member of Y’uns, an east Tennessee jug and skiffle band that started in 2007 and is still active.. I also perform in duo and trio combinations for house concerts and special events.
As a music director/organizer I produce Knoxville’s Bob Dylan Birthday Bash. 2026 will be our 20th show. My favorite event however may be the Second Sunday Community Sing that is devoted to group harmony singing because it gets people involved in singing together for the pure joy and emotional release.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A life in music has many rewards, but financial stability is not necessarily a given. You have to really love music to stay with it. It helps to be adaptable and look for opportunities.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a musician, singer, event organizer, music enthusiast, & musical instigator.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is finding ways to connect musically with other players. The communication, the musical interaction through harmony and rhythm can give a group of musicians more depth in combination than any single one of them can achieve on their own.
