Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Argo
Hi Shannon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been working as a speech therapist in Knoxville for the past 4 years in both the school and clinical fields. Throughout my career, I found a love of working with kids with complex communication needs. This January I decided to take the leap to start my own private practice in order to serve the kids who need speech services the most. I am excited to start this journey to provide speech services in my patient’s homes, schools, and/or community where communication can be the most functional!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In my career the biggest challenges I face are people (providers, teachers, family members) who are doubtful and/or against using a neurodivergent and child-led approach to therapy. In my therapy, I prioritize my students’ strengths, presume competence, offer access to all communication modalities, and, most importantly, foster connection over compliance. Sadly, not everyone is on board with this approach for autistic students so that is always my biggest challenge. I will continue to advocate for my students and educate people who are against this approach.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am speech language pathologist that specifically works with kids with complex communication needs and/or autism. I am determined to help each of my kids find their voice in any modality: spelling, scripts, spoken language, body language, AAC device, signs etc. I provide therapy in any environment that is best suited for each client so that they are comfortable and their sensory needs are able to be met.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When taking the leap to start my own practice the most important things were: having good community/support around me, talking/ listening to the Lord, and making sure all my business decisions matched my mission.
