Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Lee Hebert.
Hi Patrick Lee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a little town in rural New Hampshire.I got my start playing the piano at 10 years old. I started playing at my friend’s house in his garage by ear. Two years later, I began to take lessons and by the age of 14 I was a child performer and a full-time musician at a church. In my middle 20s, I started a teaching business called Highland piano Studios. I was still in music school and while there I took an elective on repairing and tuning Pianos. After graduating, I began my concert career with my own compositions. Spent over a decade and a half playing concerts on the road and at home and promoting my albums. 20 years ago I decided to move my operation to Tennessee. Here I continue to teach and to build Pianos. I’m working on my 11th. Album that will be released it in the spring. My 26-year-old son is my partner in the business. He was a child prodigy who spent his life playing on the road as well. He does all the same activities as I do. We use an accelerated teaching method that I designed in the early 90s called the Highland method. It is based on the European learning style that I was taught. Many of our students become , teachers, and are teaching in the area as well. We pride ourselves on this and for selling excellent condition restored Pianos. We also warranty our work, which is getting to be pretty rare in this business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have to say it’s been an even road. But not always easy. The invention of streaming services really changed the way that we made money in the 2000s. CDs are no longer wanted in royalties are almost never paid anymore. So we’ve had to change the way that we do performances. But really it’s been a wonderful and steady way to make a living all these years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would say I’m most proud of my compositions. It’s nice to see my albums being played across the world and seeing my sheet music to an audience I never even get to meet. I mainly known for my music and poetry in the connection between the two. I’m also proud of the fact that we have a great reputation in our Piano rebuilding situation. Many happy customers.!
My favorite thing is though having my son working right alongside with me doing the same things I taught him growing up. I have four daughters and not a single one of them play.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I credit my first teacher, Mrs. Van Kalgan. She taught me how to love music first. I also want to thank george Loring and George Lopez who were my teachers after music school. My lovely wife Caroline has been with me for this entire journey as well. She’s always an encouragement to me. I do give credit for all the work I did for the March of Dimes association and for the Miss New Hampshire pageant, which gave me a lot of open doors to begin my career and strengthen it. But most of all the credit goes to God, who is the giver of life and talent.
