Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Sams.
Hi Lucas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Lucas Sams. I’m from right here in Knoxville. I’ve been a musician for most of my life. In my 20’s I did a lot of touring all over the United States and Europe. My band’s were either independent, or on very small labels so I learned to do a lot of things for is in terms of business and marketing. Outside of the music part, I did mainly booking, writing press releases, managing social media, content creation, making websites, and running digital marketing campaigns.
Earlier this year I went into business for myself offering these services to local service based businesses under the name East Tennessee Digital.
My angle is it’s kind of a one stop shop for business owners. I let them choose what services they need and it’s all cohesive from a brand perspective because it’s all coming from the same source.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but I’ve known for a couple years what I wanted to do and all my actions have been to get to this point. I’ve been involved in a lot of different projects over the years. I’ve done a lot of things that worked well. I’ve failed a lot. But that’s how we learn so nothing really fazes me in terms of obstacles. I know they’re going to be there, but I just run straight into whatever it is until the problem is solved. I feel like that’s pretty much the only way to do it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I basically do is help local Knoxville businesses get more work through a combination of social media content, digital advertising, and web design, I do that by helping them convey what is special about their brand, why they can be trusted, and by focusing on the marketing from a customer out perspective. Instead of “how do we market this business?” it’s more “If I were a random person in need of a particular service what would make me care?”
What I’m most proud of is the results Ive gotten for clients. I’ve generated thousands of dollars in revenue for my clients, Ive seen 30x increases in engagement and I get to wake up every day doing things I really love to do. It’s really great to see work I do translate into success for others.
How do you think about happiness?
There are a lot of things that make me happy. I love feeling like the kind of work I do helps. I love that my level of success correlates directly with my level of effort. I love having some control over my time and life. So pretty much everything that comes with running my own business.
