Today we’d like to introduce you to K Leigh.
Hi K, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It sounds cliché, but I don’t remember a time in my life that I didn’t consider myself a writer. I’ve always enjoyed inventing stories and characters, and as I grew, so did my love of writing. As a teen, I dabbled in poetry, short stories about my own life, and fantasy. I’ve also always been a voracious reader, and when I was a teen, my mamaw gave me a stack of books… that included my first romance novel. From that moment, I was hooked. The romance genre catches a lot of negative attention, and it’s ridiculous. Women love reading about women who are more than a plot device.
As an adult, spent years reading and writing while balancing marriage and motherhood. Then, I discovered self publishing. This opened the door of opportunity, a different world for authors and readers. I began self publishing my work in 2018, while learning the ins and outs. As an indie author, you wear all the hats, so to speak. You’re responsible for every step of the process, but you also have complete control.
I attended a writing retreat with 40ish other indie authors in 2019, and met some of my very best friends there.
I’ve now been self publishing for almost seven years. I’m still learning new things every day, balancing my real life and my author life. One of my proudest moments has been hearing my children tell others that their mom is an author.
It’s been a life changing journey so far, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
I have poetry and romance books available on Amazon in Kindle Unlimited.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. As an indie author, I am responsible for my own marketing, booking editors and cover design, etc. That on top of actually writing my books can be a lot at times. I’ve learned that it’s important to maintain balance, otherwise I easily burn out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I primarily write romance, and I suppose you could say I’m known for a little angst, a little steam. That seems to be my happy medium. I also write poetry, and I’m very proud of the two collections I have. One is about motherhood, one is about the grief of losing my grandmother.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The publishing industry is always changing. Tropes go in and out, cover styles change. Right now, romantasy is a huge deal, I’m sure that will hang around for awhile. I’m always intrigued to see what the next big thing will be.
