Today we’d like to introduce you to Hakeem Johnson.
Hakeem, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Iv always been talented at drawing but never thought I would make a career out of it. I have been a tattooer for 8 years. I started tattooing once my daughter was born because I wanted more for her. I fell in love with tattooing almost immediately so I went after my apprenticeship, earned my license and never looked back. Now I own my own professional surf-themed private tattoo studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My granny was the First person to really believe in me early in my tattoo career. Once she passed, I was so torn apart that tattooing was one of the last things on my mind. Few months later, I fell back in love with tattooing but now I tattoo for HER.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional tattoo artist. I am very diverse in my craft. I own “Skin Surffers” tattoo studio in north Knoxville, Tennessee. There are only three black-owned tattoo shops in Knoxville history and I own one of them.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be Humble, consistent, patient, confident and selfless.
