Rising Stars: Meet Dexter Mims Jr of Knoxville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Mims Jr.

Hi Dexter, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was introduced to content creation in 2021 by a good friend of mine Chad Robinson. I was simply just being a part of his content and being in his videos and skits. I created a character People absolutely fell in love with it, and I started making content with him. At that moment in time, I did not have my own social media page, nor was I into making content on my own. When Chad and two other friends of mine, Kevin Watson and Larry McKenzie started to realize how much people liked seeing me in the videos, they told me I should make my own page and do my own content because people absolutely loved what I was doing. At that moment in time I didn’t want to because I felt it wasn’t for me. I didn’t consider myself funny nor entertaining, just having a good time, making content with a friend. Shortly after and a little bit of a push from my friends, I decided to make my own page in 2022. I posted my first video in May 2022, which received 12,000 views in just a few hours. Ending with the total of 40k views. At that moment in time, I only had 4k followers on Facebook, which Facebook just converted my friends into followers after turning my page professional. I did not have any other social media platforms. I started posting 5 to 6 videos a day just trying to get myself out there. While things were moving slowly, I started to see growth from 4k followers to 10k followers within a couple of weeks. My first viral video which was a reaction video, got over 15 million views. That started pouring in the followers. I went from having 10k followers to 70k followers in just two days. Then the very next week I had a second viral video which received over 20 million views. I went from having 70k followers to 150,000 followers in just a couple of days. It has now been nonstop and continues to grow daily.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Being a content creator is also a job. You have to be consistent, creative, and come up with good ideas to keep your audience and fans engaged. At times you’ll notice a slow down on your platforms but you have to stick with it. Be consistent and keep posting. People love authenticity so that’s something that I definitely recommend if you’re getting into content creation. At times it could be difficult if you need a camera man or locations to shoot your content. There have been lots of struggles, too many to count. At the beginning while making skits, I was still working a full-time job. I still had to make sure that I was able to provide for my family. At times, it became difficult trying to balance the two and as my social media presence started to take off and I ran into even more obstacles with trying to manage making videos. It felt like I hit a brick wall and nowhere to go. However, I continued my journey with making videos. Shortly after, I began the process of building a team. With a lot of local talent around Knoxville I began to reach out to individuals that I felt could form a dream team. While building this team, I continued to make videos and shoot content by myself until I could get the right crew together and this wasn’t easy. Money wasn’t coming in from my content like I had hoped so I had to get another job. I wanted to quit making videos. I wanted to drop everything I was doing. The frustration started to take over however it was my wife who told me “lace your boots up and continue on. This is a clear sign from God to focus on your passion and we will be OK.” From that day on, I didn’t look back and it was pedal to the metal. I continued to build my crew, make viral videos, and increase my social media presence. I finally got the team together and formed the Yeah Doe Cew which includes my brother Shyne Syncere, Rodney Greene (AKA Petty MC Fly), George Heckler III (AKA Tatman King), Deshawn Williams (AKA Ruder), Larry McKenzie (AKA L-Boogie), Keosha Anderson, Bianca Horton, John Moulden Jr. ( AKA Jam), Jerome Flowers (AKA Khaptin) and last Me!! Also, my extended team members and the people who been helping me from the beginning: I have to show my love to Catherine McCollum who has help me along my journey with shooting videos and making her presence known through my social media platform. She was there with me from the beginning and saw something in me that other people didn’t. Stephen Horton, who is a immaculate videographer. He was able to help me take my content to another level while working on his own projects and introduced me to a different side of content creation. My other videographer Neylan Bright from Big Slate Media who is able to help me branch out with great quality skits. Without these people I wouldn’t be where I am today. We still run into some obstacles and struggles because that’s a part of the game. You can’t give a testimony if you don’t have the test!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a content creator that focuses on making funny, reality skits. Some of the characters I am known for are Uncle Leroy, Pops, and The Hood Uber Driver. I try to always keep my hometown in mind when making skits so they stay relatable to my audience. I was recently offered a brand partnership with Dude Wipes and was given the opportunity to attend Talladega along with a couple of other members of the crew. We were able to meet the Anthony Alfredo, the NASCAR driver sponsored by Dude Wipes. I believe this opportunity came because of the hard work our team puts into our videos resulting in catching the attention of certain brands.

How do you think about luck?
I would say some unfortunate bad luck that happened in my life led me exactly to where I’m at now. I have made past decisions that now when I look back caused me to go down a different path that I may not have taken. I feel I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing due to some “bad luck”. With any luck, good or bad, I still believe I am the driver of my success along with my team and my support system.
