Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Hull.
Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was a hairstylist for 15 years before I met my wife, Emily. She had a small Canon DSLR camera she had bought for a vacation to Hawaii, I asked to borrow it for a week. The long story short is I fell in love with it and within a few days ordered my own Canon 80D. We have 5 children so you can imagine that I spent all my spare time practicing with them as my main models.
Countless hours on YouTube watching tutorials and many late nights reading technical forums are how I learned to use a camera. After I would learn something, I would immediately teach Emily, so she ended up growing as a photographer along with me. After a year with my Canon, I made the switch to a professional Sony camera. By this point, we had friends and family asking us to take their pictures. This became so frequent that we decided to start charging money for shoots and thus began our photography career.
I was still doing it part-time while working full-time at a hair salon. When Covid hit and the salon shut down my wife and I decided that it was time for me to pursue my photography full time. I took the opportunity and made the transition from hairstylist to full-time photographer. I bought a second camera for Emily, and we branded ourselves as photographers.
We also decided to make weddings our main style of the shoot with an emphasis on family and couples because of how much emotion and personality come out in this type of shoot. Since we started with our children- family photos involving children will always be special to us!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road, during the pandemic we were expecting our youngest son. For that reason, we took social distancing very seriously and would only shoot from afar. It was also scary going from a stable job to starting a business from the ground up, especially with all of the uncertainties that came during 2020.
We also wanted to take some time off to spend time with our baby, we decided to work until he was due. We were 5 days out from his birth shooting a ten-hour wedding. That was an adventure!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in wedding and family shoots! Your wedding is the most important day of your life! We take pride in making sure those moments are captured and worth swooning over for years to come! We try not to follow trends with color schemes and really take a look at what style will be timeless for generations to come.
We take our time to pay attention to every detail. We have the advantage of working and living together, so it is nice to have extra eyes to look over and make sure the photos are perfect before sending the galleries to our clients.
What does success mean to you?
Success to us is the client’s love of their photos! That is the reason we are here, to freeze moments in time for our clients. We love to read friends and families’ comments on the photos when they are shared on social media.
