Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura LaRue.
Hi Laura, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started day drinking with my girlfriends I wanted to create something fun for our day so I made cupcakes with chocolate edible shot glasses put them in the middle of the cupcake filled them with liquor and piped frosting all around. As we stood in the parking lot of the restaurant trying to drink the shot liquor and frosting went all down our faces and as we laughed I realized I needed to try something easier.
So I started experimenting at home with the liquor in the cake came up with the right concoction took it to our next get-together and my friends said it was amazing I needed to start selling it. So I started posting on the Facebook marketplace the little Cake Jars filled with Liquor cake and sold a few here and there but my big shining was when my Facebook marketplace ad caught the eye of a now good friend named Kendra who was putting on a shoe event and asked me to set up as a vendor.
I took 100 jars with me to the event and sold nearly all of them. After that, my name quickly grew. About two years later we are now working on construction to open a new storefront at 941 N. Broadway in a building that we purchased. I am a 100% woman-owned business gratefully supported by my husband four boys and daughter who works for me. We even now have additional family helping as well (Aunt Lil)
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a fairly smooth road. The biggest hardships have been overcoming the legal hurdles involved with selling liquor in the cake.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am just getting started! We are focusing on growing and expanding and really getting our name out there. A lot of people haven’t heard of us and don’t know we ship all over the US. While this business started as liquor cakes, we have plans to expand our menu once our store is open.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is having the family time and flexibility in my life. Sure making good money is a benefit and a goal but ultimately the happiness of working for myself and with my family matters the most.
