Life & Work with Stacey Norman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Norman.

Hi Stacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My children were my inspiration to start taking photos on a regular basis. Like many moms who are just trying to document their fast-growing children, I feel in love with the process. Creating, finding ways to make everyday things interesting, using different lighting conditions, was such a creative outlet for me.

That grew into me starting with family photography, training in newborn safety/photography, and even equine photography. This is how Plum Poppy Photography came to be!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business wasn’t all a smooth process. While I absolutely adore working with families and being creative, the business side was something I had to really work on, still do actually! I absolutely get my joy from people and capturing people and emotion on camera, so sitting at the desk to do my bookkeeping and admin-type work is still something I really have to work at.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I adore newborn photography and have been doing that for the last 5 years. I love to pose babies in sweet, comfortable, beautiful ways, but still, keep the focus very much on them. I work out of an indoor studio but also travel to clients’ homes to do documentary-style sessions as well.

Equine Photography is also a passion of mine and something I love just as much as newborns. I was a horse-crazy little girl, who finally was able to own my own horses late in life and I love to capture the emotions and connections between people and their horses. Same with babies and horses, I love capturing family units.

I do some poses images every session but I really encourage people to look at their sessions as an adventure and just really want them to enjoy each other’s company at the moment, while I happen to be snapping pictures.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Well first, I love to create! I also love meeting families in a quiet one-on-one environment. I love seeing how they interact with each other. Some people come in thinking it’s another photo session but leave feeling like they’ve had fun, be able to connect with their families, and genuinely have a good time.

That to me is everything when families have a great experience and come back year after year to do the same.
