Life & Work with Shelby Urban of Knoxville TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Urban

Hi Shelby , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a hairstylist for 15yrs, started in Kansas and made my way to California for the last 7yrs. Loved my time in the sunshine state but missed affordable living and being closer to friends and family all over the Midwest. I was actually going to give myself a break from hair when we moved here in February but I saw the locals needed my craft to help them have beautiful effortless hair.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life in general is a hard road, luckily I’ve moved so much in my career and have learned from each salon and move that this time moving I knew the hard work I had to put in. I started working in April, in just a few months I’m already building and connecting with the clientele I want. I love a new chapter in life. it makes me appreciate what I have built in my past and using those tools help me succeed now.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For starters I cut all gender hair. My cuts are based on lengths texture or current trends. I specialize in curly hair cutting, I educate my clients so they can re create the style I give them. My favorite saying is you have to do your hair every single day.. you should feel confident in styling. Unfortunately most clients are clueless when it comes to hair. Plus majority of curly people have the same story as I did, never received a cut I liked and always left the salon straight rather than in my natural texture. All my color and cuts are low maintenance or lived in. We all need haircuts as humans but to get your hair colored is a luxury, so I want my clients to be able to live with their color for months or years. Since I’ve been in the industry for so long I really can do it all and if I don’t want to do it I’ll tell the client and suggest another stylist or salon who can give them that. I’m most proud of overcoming toxic bosses who told me I’d never make it as a colorist or hairstylist.. but that’s also just that old school mentality to this Buisness. I’ve been an independent stylist since 2019 and I’ll never go back to working for someone.
I’m know around for my curly cuts shag razor cutting organic coloring and my lived in blondes

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m looking forward to building a clientele. Giving Cleint’s a safe space during their visit and showing them how passionate I am over hair. We all deserve to have great hair. It’s the first thing we are described about. Book your appointment today and see the magic at velvet panther.
