Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Johnson.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in the Đồng Nai province of Vietnam. I was then adopted when I was about one year old and brought to America.
Growing up, I would look through the magazines whether it was at the dentist’s office or at the hair salon. I would see these gorgeous models wearing these clothes that looked absolutely amazing and so I fell in love with the fashion industry.
Recently, I was selected to model for the Fleurish fashion show in Knoxville, Tennessee. The fashion show consisted of many designers whose fashion was sustainable.
From this, my modeling career kind of kicked off. Once the show ended, I started applying to a few modeling agencies to see if this was something I truly could do as a career. So far, I have received multiple offers from local agencies as well as MMG in New York. I also have been able to work with local photographers, makeup artists, and companies to further my modeling career.
One day, I hope to be modeling for Vogue and maybe even attending a Met Gala. I also hope that through this process, I can be an example to all the little girls who have the same dream as me and be the South East Asian American representation the Hollywood and fashion industry needs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my modeling career has not always been a smooth road. Most of my family believes I am throwing away my college education to pursue something that they view as “toxic.”
To me, I believe anything can be toxic if you allow it to be, but that does not always mean it is. Another struggle in pursuing my modeling career has been my mental health. It is very easy to allow your mind to tell you that you are not skinny enough or tall enough.
A piece of advice if you are currently struggling with this, love your body how it is. We are all different, and being different is beautiful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I don’t really have a specific thing I do. Sometimes, I work with local photographers and sometimes I work with companies when it comes to modeling.
However, I would say the thing that sets me apart from others would probably be that I am Vietnamese in the predominately White modeling industry.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I would say that most people who know me that might not know about me is that I have three biological sisters.
