Life & Work with Sara Bakker of Crossville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Bakker.

Hi Sara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Common Grounds was inspired by our oldest daughter. When she graduated from high school, we realized there were very few opportunities for young adults with disabilities. We started asking around and found so many other families in the same situation—people who wanted to work, contribute, and feel part of something, but just didn’t have the chance.
That’s really where the idea began. After more than twenty years of advocating for people with disabilities, we decided to take action and create a space that offered meaningful jobs and genuine connections. In March 2024, we opened Common Grounds, not just as a coffee shop, but as a community where everyone belongs. What’s grown from that dream is something beautiful—people learning from each other, building confidence, and finding common ground in the most genuine way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t all been smooth—but every challenge has pushed us to grow. Our biggest struggle has been raising the funds to keep things running. With 29 part-time employees and 2 full-time staff members, the shop isn’t yet fully self-sustaining, but we’re making progress. Each month, we see more customers finding us, more community support, and more reasons to believe in what we’re building. It’s not easy, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve spent the past 20 years as a stay-at-home mom to our five children, and that experience shaped everything I do now. My husband is a contractor—he’s done all the remodeling at Common Grounds and still handles the maintenance, often after a full day of work. We make a good team.
What really drives both of us is helping people reach their full potential, especially those who are too often overlooked. Common Grounds is an extension of that passion.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is hearing the stories—both from our customers and our employees—about how Common Grounds has touched their lives. Some talk about gaining confidence and learning new skills; others share how spending time here has changed the way they see people who are different from them. Those moments remind me why we started this in the first place. It’s incredible to see how a simple cup of coffee can bring people together and change hearts.
