Today we’d like to introduce you to John Mountjoy. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Troublesome Times was founded by lifelong friends, John Mountjoy and Todd Campbell. Our music began many years ago, in high school, as we passed the time between baseball practices.
In the summer of 2021, as we were both playing solo across many social media platforms, we decided to give forming a whole band a shot. We quickly contacted a friend and band director Aaron Zechinni about joining. We have since added another former band director, Michael Brown, to the lineup. We have recorded and released a six-song EP, titled No Pressure, which is available for download on all streaming platforms.
We focus primarily on writing all original, alternative country music that maintains the background influence that growing up in Appalachia has had on us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel that any musician would tell you that the road is rough. Regardless of how “finished” your product is, there is a bit of a grind to get it in the ear of the people.
We have been trying to get our sound out in any way possible and that requires hours upon hours of work, outside of playing the shows. Venues are established; they have their regulars.
For a new act to break into the rotation you have to prove yourself and I feel that most musicians in the area can attest to this being one of the biggest struggles we face.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We all have day jobs but we consider ourselves to be musicians. Music is a specialized art form that Carrie’s the emotion of the artist and transplants that into the listener.
We have written lots of songs and played in lots of venues. To me, I feel the most pride when someone tells me that the song we wrote made them feel the emotions we felt when we wrote it.
What matters most to you?
We’re doing this because we love it! It is an escape. Music is therapeutic to me and what matters to me most is that through this we can feel that peace and joy that comes from it.
I love booking big shows and putting some money in my pocket, but in the end, this isn’t about money
