Life & Work with Chloe Caldwell of Maryville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Caldwell.

Hi Chloe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve been creative all my life but was scared to take the unconventional route of cosmetology school. But to say the least, it paid off. I was headed off to college because I thought that was the only way to make a living and be successful. After talking to a few people in the industry, I realized it wasn’t just a hobby and that we needed to break that stigma. It took me two whole years to get through school. It was mentally and physically draining. But if I could give any advice to an aspiring stylist, just stick through it, and it will repay you times ten. I started in booth rent, which is usually a no-go for younger stylists, but I feel like it was just what I needed to kick off my career. Building a clientele came with a lot of hard work and self-promotion. I continued to learn and educate myself on new techniques and trends and eventually became a lived-in color specialist. I focus on giving my clients personality-focused hair, using their lifestyle to determine what color best fits them. Quickly, I grew my dream clientele and opened my suite at Mac Studios. I have been blessed beyond measure to grow my career so quickly, and I can’t imagine any other path for myself. I have now begun an education program, hosting classes for rising stylists. I hope to inspire them in more ways than one by breaking old habits and introducing easier ways to drive results.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been a challenging road. Some rising stylists, including myself at the time, thought it would be easy to rise to the top because the beauty industry was so successful. Learning to manage money and run your own business as a 19-year-old was a slap in the face. It came with many bumps in the road, but those have made me into the stylist I am today. I have experienced unhappy clients, loss, sickness, and many mistakes along the way, and that is all part of the journey. I have now grasped what kind of stylist I want to be and what I want to stand for, but that came with a little struggle. I still work daily to grow my following and expand my knowledge in the field.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in lived-in color and personality-driven hair. This color style allows for seamless growth and creates a natural sun-kissed look. Personality-driven hair means using my client’s lifestyles and preferences to give them long-lasting and beautiful results. Their hair will fit in with whatever activities they’re doing day to day. I also value the health of my client’s hair while coloring, and I always consider that in my work. No one likes their color if their hair is breaking off!

What does success mean to you?
For a long time, I thought monetary was the only type of success. And don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy money and want to profit from my business. But as time goes on, I have realized success isn’t measured by how many clients you have or how much money you bring in. Success to me is bringing any happiness you can into the world, and the relationships I’ve made with my clients have brought so much joy to life. I love seeing the smile on their face when they finally feel confident in their skin. I have developed so many friendships in this industry and brought some happiness to my clients. I am so thankful for them.
