Inspiring Conversations with George Mack of Mental Health Counceling

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Mack.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is George Mack. I am a professional counselor who has started a private practice, The Sexual Healing Institute, that focuses on sexual-based disorders and other mental health dysfunctions. My story starts as a teenager who was not expected to do much in life as I was not a good student and my ambition drive was low. Therefore, I started working at a local factory. After a few years of grinding on the production floor, I developed a drive to achieve more. Therefore, I went and got a degree in Computer Science. After I got this degree, I decided to get another in Computer Networking.

After getting that degree, I managed to obtain B.S. in Business Management. After getting these three degrees, I was awarded a couple of different positions at my factory. I went from group leader to Human Resources Generalist to Statistical Analyst. Although I was achieving success higher than I could imagine, I still never felt happy. I often looked at my wife’s career as a Nurse Practitioner and noticed she had a feeling of fulfillment by helping her patients. Therefore, I started my journey into graduate school to get a master’s in professional counseling. After getting my degree, I transitioned from Statistical Analyst to Mental Health Therapist. After working 2 years in an addiction treatment facility, acute mental health residential facility, and an adolescent OP facility, I became licensed by the state of Tennessee as an LPC/MHSP.

Then I spend the next year working in a local high school as an in-school therapist. After being exposed to people’s lives, I discovered that there were a lot of individuals who suffered from sexual abuse and sexual disorders. This helped me decide to open a private practice and enroll in my current Ph.D. program that focuses on sexual-based disorders. My goal is to make a living by helping individuals cope with disorders that often are not addressed in doctor’s offices and counseling centers in our area.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles are not uncommon. As a black male, I have encountered some difficulties with race and prejudices. In addition, my wife and I had a baby at 19. Therefore, most of our academic successes came with caring for a child and working full-time jobs.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mental Health Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Sexual Healing Institute focuses on the science of Sexology. Sexology is the scientific study of human sexuality, including human sexual interests, behaviors, and functions. As Sexologists, we apply tools from several academic fields, such as biology, medicine, psychology, epidemiology, sociology, and criminology.

We strive to have superior knowledge of studies that include sexual development (puberty), sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual relationships, sexual activities, paraphilias, and atypical sexual interests. Sexology also spans sexuality among the mentally and/or physically disabled.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
