Hidden Gems: Meet Tommy Hindman of Due North Counseling, LLC (Owner) & Renew Clinic Knoxville (Executive Director)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy Hindman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, here’s the “shortish” version. Lol

I didn’t exactly “set out” to be where I am today, but my “story” is living proof that God can redeem even the most broken stories. 8 Years ago, I was caught in the grip of addiction, and It nearly cost me my life when I overdosed and came face-to-face with the reality that I wasn’t in control anymore. I spent close to a week on life support at Parkwest Hospital and my family didn’t know if I was going to live or die and they were told by doctors that if I did survive I would have permanent brain damage. After coming off life support I went treatment and while I was there I lost everything… My wife, house, cars, and my 1 year old son whom I wasn’t allowed to see unsupervised That was my breaking point…. but it was also the beginning of my story of redemption. By the grace of God and the support of people who refused to give up on me, I got sober and started to rebuild my life.

What began as survival turned into my calling. I discovered a passion for walking alongside people who were hurting—marriages on the brink, families fractured by addiction, men and women who felt like they were too far gone. I wanted to help them see what I had to learn the hard way: that healing is possible, and no one is beyond hope.

I trained, studied, and became a therapist. But more importantly, I learned how to connect with people on a human level. I think my effectiveness comes from the fact that I’ve been in the pit myself, I know what despair feels like, I know how far addiction can take someone, and I also know what it feels like to be pulled out of it.

Today, I am married to an amazing woman that I absolutely don’t deserve, I have 5 beautiful children, I lead a Christ-centered treatment center called Renew Clinic where clinical excellence and faith collide. I also own a private practice in Farragut, TN called Due North Counseling, LLC. What started with me trying to piece my life back together has grown into a mission to help restore lives, marriages, and families. Every day I get to watch redemption unfold in real time, and that’s the greatest privilege of my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This is funny… ummm not so much. I think the greatest obstacle though has really been myself. Recovery is painful and is never easy but I also wouldn’t trade it for anything. There’s a process of self-discovery that’s never ending and throughout that I am still learning of ways to be better person, a better husband, a better father, friend, therapist…

We’ve been impressed with Due North Counseling, LLC (Owner) & Renew Clinic Knoxville (Executive Director) , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Renew Clinic, where I serve as Executive Director, our mission is simple but profound: to restore lives broken by addiction and mental health struggles. We’re a Christ-centered intensive outpatient program that integrates clinical excellence with spiritual hope through a strong unwavering biblical foundation. What sets us apart is that we don’t just treat symptoms, we go after the roots of pain, trauma, and shame. We specialize in addiction treatment, trauma therapy, and marriage/family restoration. I’m most proud of the fact that people walk through our doors thinking they’re beyond repair, and they leave knowing they’re not only capable of healing but called to a new life. Watching families reconcile, marriages rebuild, and individuals rediscover purpose—that’s what drives our team.

Alongside that, I own Due North Counseling, a private practice designed to give individuals, couples, and families a personalized space for healing and growth. Where Renew provides structure and community at an intensive level, Due North offers tailored therapy for people who may not need that intensity but still long for transformation. We’re known for being deeply relational—therapy that doesn’t feel cold or clinical, but warm, grounded, and real.

What ties both organizations together is our commitment to authentic connection. Whether in a clinical group setting or a private counseling session, people know they’re not just a number, they’re seen, valued, and met with both professional skill and genuine compassion.

If readers remember one thing about our work, I’d want it to be this: we don’t just help people survive, we walk with them into a life where they can thrive. From Functioning to Flourishing as we like to say.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that God is divine and providential:
