Hidden Gems: Meet Mike McDuffie of Mobile Auto Glass Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike McDuffie.

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in college when my uncle, who owned a glass business in South Florida, introduced me to auto glass work. His business handled everything from residential and commercial windows to shower glass and, of course, auto glass. After college, I worked in agriculture and landscaping for several years. Then, after meeting my wife in 2011 and marrying in 2013, we entered full-time ministry as youth and young adult pastors for about 6.5 to 7 years. In 2020, we relocated to the North Knox area so my wife could take a children’s pastor position. Shortly after moving, the COVID-19 epidemic hit, and I was unsure of my next career move. I briefly tried renovation and home restoration work, but it wasn’t a good fit. One day, my son-in-law mentioned that Safelite, where he worked, was hiring. I landed a job there and worked for just over a year, but the six-day work weeks left me with very little family time, especially with my six daughters, four of whom were still at home. After some conversations with friends and family, I decided to start my own auto glass business. I left Safelite in June of ’24 and began Mobile Auto Glass Services. It’s been a journey with its ups and downs, but I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve done, the connections we’ve made in the Knoxville area, and how far the business has come. It’s been an amazing journey to where we are now.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, by any means. Starting out was tough, but we got a good start, which was a big help. Some of our first clients were commercial accounts with vehicle fleets, and we even secured a contract with Carmax for over a year in our first year. I started dedicating days to connect with businesses, auto dealerships, used car lots, and insurance companies, marketing myself as a service provider. It wasn’t always easy, but it has definitely paid off. I’ve learned that networking, marketing, and meeting people are essential for connecting and growing if you want to be successful – you have to put in the work to get the work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’d say the biggest risk I’ve taken in this journey would be starting my own business. Stepping out from a consistent weekly paycheck, working for someone else, was a big risk for me and my family. We weren’t guaranteed anything when we made this decision. It was tough working through those first few months, wondering how we would cover bills, etc. As a family of eight, with six of us at home here in Tennessee, that was a significant risk. Honestly, I’m not typically one for taking risks like that, but I felt God was leading us into a new season and would guide us through.
