Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiana Jones.
Hi Kiana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I never planned to start a terrarium shop. It really began as a quiet form of therapy.
In the middle of a chapter of my life filled with noise, work stress, personal shifts, and the overwhelming feeling that I was always on I found comfort in building something small and alive. A glass jar. A handful of moss. A tiny fern. Suddenly, I had a world I could care for one that asked for presence, not perfection.
What started as a side hobby turned into a passion I couldn’t ignore. I studied plant care more deeply, leaned on my background in biological science from the University of Tennessee, and began sharing terrariums with friends and family.
In 2019, I officially launched Plush Moon Terrarium Co with a mission to help others reconnect with nature, even in the smallest spaces. After years of pop-ups, mobile terrarium workshops and packing kits from my kitchen table, we opened our first storefront in Knoxville. Our studio is now a living, breathing space where people come to create something beautiful and walk away with more than just a plant they leave with a piece of calm they built themselves.
We specialize in enclosed, low-maintenance terrariums that are as artful as they are alive. We also host workshops where anyone green thumb or not, can learn to build their own. It’s about more than dirt and glass. It’s about finding a moment of peace and beauty that you can take home with you.
Being a small, woman-owned business means we pour ourselves into every detail. When you walk into our shop, you’re not just visiting a store, you’re stepping into a miniature ecosystem of intention, warmth, and creativity.
We’re here for the plant-curious, the stressed-out, the creative souls, and the folks who “can’t keep anything alive.” (Spoiler: yes, you can.)
Whether you build your own terrarium at our DIY bar or join us for a workshop, we invite you to come be part of our little world. It’s growing and we’d love for you to grow with us!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building Plush Moon Terrarium Co has been a journey of deep love, intentional growth, and honestly, a lot of trial by fire.
In the early days (and even now), I wore every hat. I was packing kits from my kitchen table, responding to messages on my lunch break, and hauling terrarium supplies across town in my car. It was exciting, but exhausting. I didn’t have a marketing team, a storefront, or even a blueprint for how to run a business like this, I just had a belief that what I was doing could bring people peace and joy.
One of the biggest challenges was helping people understand what a terrarium even is. It’s not your average houseplant. It’s living art, self-contained nature, and in many cases, something people didn’t know they needed until they experienced it. I had to build a brand and educate a community at the same time. That meant being present at markets, doing pop-ups, explaining things one person at a time and honestly, that one-on-one connection became the foundation of our following.
Opening our storefront felt like a dream come true, but it was also one of the scariest steps I’ve ever taken. I didn’t have unlimited hours, a big staff, or a tourist-heavy area in the city. I had to create something people would seek out. Something beautiful and personal. Every detail of the shop had to reflect that energy from the moment someone walks in, to the terrarium they leave with.
Perhaps the hardest challenge has been learning how to scale without losing the heart of what makes Plush Moon special. I’ve had to say no to faster, more profitable paths to preserve what really matters: quality, creativity, and connection. This isn’t just about plants in jars, it’s about giving people a space to slow down, create something meaningful, and reconnect with nature (and themselves).
There have been moments where I wasn’t sure if it would work. Times where burnout hit hard or doubt crept in. But then someone walks in and says, “This place feels like magic,” and I remember why I started.
Plush Moon was never about perfection it was about intention. And every obstacle has only deepened that purpose.
We’ve been impressed with Plush Moon Terrarrium Co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Plush Moon Terrarium Co is a creative, plant-centered business based in Knoxville, Tennessee that specializes in handcrafted, enclosed live terrariums and immersive plant experiences. We’re best known for helping people create their own tiny living ecosystems, whether through our DIY Terrarium Building Bar, private workshops, or pop-up events.
What sets us apart is the balance we strike between art and science. Our terrariums aren’t just decorative, they’re designed to thrive with minimal maintenance, and every jar is built with intention, using horticultural knowledge and a deep respect for nature. We make plant care approachable, beautiful, and accessible; especially for people who think they don’t have a green thumb.
We’re proud to be a woman-owned, community-rooted brand that creates space for people to slow down and reconnect with nature, with creativity, and with each other. Whether you walk into our shop for guided workshop as a fun activity with friends, a birthday, bridal party, or corporate team, the experience is hands-on, calming, and memorable.
What I’m most proud of is the emotional connection our brand creates. People don’t just leave with a terrarium, they leave with something they made, something alive, something they feel proud of.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people is that I used to kill all of my plants. Seriously, I loved them, but I just couldn’t keep them alive. Terrariums became my escape out of that cycle. They were the first way I experienced real plant success, and it changed everything. The enclosed environment gave me a sense of control, peace, and wonder; and that’s what I try to share through Plush Moon Terrarium Co.
What most people also don’t know is that my journey with nature didn’t start with plants, it started with aquariums. From a young age, I was obsessed with the colorful variety of fish and invertebrates, and I spent hours creating aquatic ecosystems. That love for exotic life and attention to detail still shows up in my work today, especially in the textures and unusual plants we choose for our terrariums.
