Hidden Gems: Meet Alexa Bishop of Alexa Bishop Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Bishop

Hi Alexa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in High Springs, FL and Arden, NC but knew I wanted to go to college in the northeast. I attended Cornell University and got a degree in chemical engineering. After graduation I moved to NYC and worked for Kraft Foods as a process engineer on Capri Sun. After two years of that I decided I didn’t want to be an engineer and loved Broadway instead. I quit my job and became an intern at a Broadway general management company. After a few years I joined the Company Management union and became a Company Manager on shows like The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, and Wicked. Then COVID happened and Broadway shut down for 1.5 years. I started to work remotely part-time and redefine myself. Broadway returned and I helped Wicked re-open, but then I knew my Broadway days were over. I no longer wanted to work 6 days a week with 60 hr weeks. I wanted weekends and holidays and time for travel. I spent most of 2022 traveling the world and then moved to Panama for almost 2 years. I started picking up more part-time remote jobs and eventually opened my own business consulting company as a freelancer. I am now a digital nomad and have no home base! This year I’ve been in Argentina and Italy and plan to visit England, Scotland, and Germany this summer. My life continues to change and I look forward to it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With COVID taking away Broadway, I had no more purpose. I felt like I lost my identity and had nothing to fall back on. I didn’t have hobbies, I didn’t have a persona that wasn’t theatre. I was depressed and angry for awhile. It took a lot of work to figure who I was outside of my job. That success wasn’t based on my job or accomplishments, but on what I said it was. I learned that the people in my life, my friends and family, mattered more to me than my career. It helped guide my decision to leave Broadway and start traveling.

Most recently I ended a relationship of 2 years with a man in Panama. It was abrupt and painful. I had built a life in Panama and now need to start over. I’m still figuring it out but choosing me was the right decision and I’ve felt so supported by my friends and family. It’s time for the next chapter.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Alexa Bishop Consulting?
So I now run my own company for Business Consulting. What that means is a solo business owner or a small company that is growing (or wants to grow) hires me to support them operationally. That could look like project management support, bookkeeping, contracting/invoicing support, client services/interfacing, travel planning, content editing, and team management. I particularly like working with individuals or companies that are female-owned and/or DEI-focused.

I am known for being a good communicator and not dropping balls. I customize my work so that it works for the client. I’m proud of being someone that people can count on no matter what. My clients feel safe with me.

I want your readers to know that they don’t have to do it all. If they have business ideas or dreams, bring in support to make it happen.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take the jump. Believe it will work out because it will. You don’t have to know how it’s going to work or play out. You just have to keep following the doors that open. Don’t follow rules just because others do. This is YOUR life.
