Edit Values Rising Stars: Meet Michael Byerley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Byerley.

Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I began photography, as a hobby, at a young age, and the interest carried through high school and into my time in the military. I attended The Art Institute of Atlanta after my service ended. After graduating, I spent several years working for different photography companies, but I had a hard time finding my niche and decided to freelance. I did portraits, weddings, etc., but it wasn’t until I stumbled upon a Civil War reenactment that things started to turn. I didn’t realize just how large this community was.

It not only gave me an introduction to event photography but helped me develop skills in photographing large events. I have met a great many people who not only enjoyed my work but would hire me for personal photography. I began to receive attention from historical publications that were interested in my work and I have been doing photography for The American Battlefield Trust for their magazine Hallowed Ground, as well as, National Geographic’s book The Civil War Traveler.

The historical theme is what I enjoy the most but not limited to this. It certainly opened doors and brought exposure for me, but I enjoy people and telling stories.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle what getting past the death of my wife. With two children to raise my priorities changed. I stepped away from photography for several years to take care of my children. However, my friend Stephanie Fox (who followed my work) stepped in and became and has become a driving force in my work. She has always been an influence on me.

Even though I may not always agree with her, she has always been extremely honest with me and keeps me focused. We are always going to have obstacles and setbacks, but our personal obstacles are the most difficult. I am very lucky to have people like Stephanie in my corner and should always rely on our friends and family to bring us encouragement.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am most known for my work on historical and cultural themes. However, I also do portraits, events, and help with nonprofit organizations. I really do not shy away from any type of work and I am able to adapt to different situations. I try very hard to work with my subjects to capture a mood and tell a story.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My son and daughter make me the happiest. It is my children that have really made a difference and given me the reason to stay in good spirits and continue to be a family. My wife used to be my number one model, but now my daughter is filling that role.

I try to remember what I have lost and what I have when I photograph a family, or a wedding, or a special event for a child. I understand the importance of a photograph.
