Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Cheyenne Allen, PT, CBS.
Hi Dr. Cheyenne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with babies and their families. Going into college, I had decided that pediatric physical therapy was the best way for me to balance time snuggling babies, making them work hard, and telling parents that they’re doing a great job. I worked in outpatient therapy offices for about 3 years before deciding to start my own business- which is how I’ve gotten to you today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working as a physical therapist takes a greater mental toll than many people realize—research shows that up to 82% of PTs experience burnout at some point in their career. Just three years in, I was already starting to feel it: constantly battling with insurance companies, juggling patient care and documentation, feeling restricted in the treatments I could offer, and carrying the emotional weight of every patient home with me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that something had to change. Starting my own business became the turning point. With the support of the right people cheering me on (looking you, Aught!) , everything began to shift—and the transformation has been incredible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a neurologically focused pediatric physical therapist and certified breastfeeding specialist with advanced training in craniomandibular, oral motor, and airway dysfunction. My passion lies in helping babies thrive—starting from breastfeeding and continuing through every major milestone.
I’m the founder of Milestones Therapy + Wellness, where we teach parents how to help their child reach developmental milestones through exercise, educaiton, and encouragement.
What makes MTW different? We’re not limited by insurance or boxed-in treatment plans. Our team is made up of specialists in a wide range of areas—sensory processing, reflex integration, tethered oral tissues (like tongue and lip ties), airway development, breastfeeding, dynamic movement intervention (DMI), and fascial release techniques. That means we know what we’re doing, and we collaborate closely with other professionals to build personalized, whole-child care plans that actually work.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I think pediatric therapy is going to keep moving toward more holistic, collaborative care—especially in the early years of life. We’re already seeing a shift where families aren’t just looking for milestone checklists—they want providers who understand the why behind delays or challenges, and who can partner with them to treat the whole child, not just one body part or symptom.
I also think there’s going to be a bigger focus on things like airway health, nervous system regulation, tethered oral tissues, and the impact of birth and early feeding on development—which used to be more niche but are becoming part of the bigger picture in pediatric care. Parents are becoming more informed, and I love that—they’re asking great questions and expecting more from their providers.
And honestly, the trend of stepping outside the limitations of insurance will continue to grow. It gives therapists room to actually treat, not just check boxes, and that’s where real progress happens instead of burnt out therapist providing less than enthusiastic care.
