Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ashley Walker, DHS, LPC.
Hi Dr. Ashley , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My decision to become a therapist was deeply rooted in my own personal experiences navigating emotional challenges during adolescence. These early struggles fostered a passion for understanding mental health and supporting others through their healing journeys. Later in life, during the emotional upheaval of my divorce, I was introduced to yoga—a practice that became instrumental in my recovery. Through yoga, I was able to reconnect with my body in a more spiritual and embodied way, deepening both my self-awareness and my relationship with God. This integration of mind, body, and spirit continues to inform my therapeutic approach today. Yoga helped me heal in such a transformative way that I now feel called to share this experience with as many women as I can, supporting them through their own challenging times with compassion, empowerment, and holistic care.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been entirely smooth, but each challenge has played a meaningful role in shaping who I am both personally and professionally. I became a mother at 19 years old, an experience that brought profound responsibility and purpose to my life at an early age. As I navigated young adulthood and the emotional struggles of adolescence, I developed a deep desire to understand the human experience—ultimately leading me to the field of therapy.
Later, I endured a traumatic divorce that became a pivotal point in my healing journey. It was during that time that I was introduced to yoga, a practice that allowed me to reconnect with my body and strengthen my spiritual relationship with God. Through yoga, I found a sense of peace, clarity, and personal empowerment.
In the midst of these life transitions, I completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as a single mother. God has blessed me with two amazing children who have always been my greatest motivation. Everything I have done—every sacrifice and every goal—has been driven by my desire to give them a better life and a strong foundation. These experiences—while challenging—have taught me resilience, deepened my empathy, and ultimately became the foundation of the work I do today. Rather than obstacles, I now see them as transformative chapters that allow me to hold space for others with authenticity, compassion, and purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I began my career in behavioral health in 2013, working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 2015, I expanded my focus to adolescent care by developing and implementing a Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at a local mental health clinic. This experience led to continued IOP work with adult populations at the same facility, and eventually to the creation and implementation of a comprehensive adult mental health and substance abuse IOP program at another clinic.
Since 2017, I have been providing individual outpatient therapy to children, adolescents, and adults, addressing a wide range of mental health and substance use concerns. In addition to clinical therapy, I serve as a Criminal Justice Liaison, working in collaboration with the court system to support justice-involved individuals struggling with substance abuse. My role involves identifying appropriate treatment options and advocating for rehabilitative care over punitive measures when appropriate.
Most recently, I launched my own yoga intervention studio, where I integrate yoga therapy into clinical practice. This endeavor reflects my commitment to holistic care by combining evidence-based treatment with somatic and spiritual practices to support healing and long-term recovery.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First and foremost, all credit and glory belong to God. Without His grace, guidance, and strength, none of this would have been possible. I also would not be the woman I am today without the two beautiful children God has trusted me to raise. They have been my greatest motivation, and every step I’ve taken in my career has been to provide them with a better life and a strong example of faith and perseverance.
My parents have played a foundational role in my journey. Their unwavering support made it possible for me to complete both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as a single mother. They have walked beside me through every season—encouraging me through the challenges of parenting, higher education, and personal growth.
My Aunt Kari has also been a profound source of inspiration. Her strength as both a mother and a woman of God has continually motivated me to walk in purpose, with integrity and faith.
The support of my husband during my doctoral program was especially significant. His encouragement, patience, and belief in my vision allowed me to stay grounded and focused while pursuing such a demanding academic goal. His partnership has been a blessing and a steady source of strength.
I have also been blessed with incredible professional relationships throughout my career. Colleagues like Meg Paisley, Danielle Kohler, Lynne Fry, Heidi Ables, and another valued co-worker—whom I will keep anonymous—have been instrumental in my growth. Their encouragement, collaboration, and wisdom have helped shape my clinical identity and commitment to compassionate, client-centered care.
