Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Redding
Hi Brad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in golf begins with my first job at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, TN. I was a shop attendant in the golf shop. My father introduced me to the game but after working at the club I fell in love with the game and knew this is what my career would be
After turning professional I knew that I n needed to expand my knowledge and experience different operations. I accepted and position as Assistant Golf Professional at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, MI The Director of Golf was a well know instructor and he took me under his wing. I needed to improve my game and teaching skills. Here I discovered I had a passion for helping golfers with their games.
Keeping on the track to improve my skills I accepted the Assistant Professional and then became the Head Golf Professional at Atlanta Golf Club in Alpharetta, GA Here I showcased all my skills I had learned to this point in my career. The one problem was AGC is a very private club. I while I had a good following the clubs policies didn’t allow me to teach non members.
Form there I my a major decision. I left AGC and accept at teaching position at Willow Creek Golf Club back in my home town of Knoxville, TN. Now my only responsibility was to teach. I people saw I had a passion and knack for teaching. In my first year I gave 500 one hour lessons 4 clinics and 2 all day schools. In my second year I gave 1,4oo one hour lessons, 5 clinics and 4 all day schools. Other clubs in the Knoxville came calling to bring my skills. While in Knoxville I was voted to #1 Golf Instructor by Golf Digest, Was name to Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America and received the Tennessee PGA Teacher of the Year 6 times. I had a 2 day appearance on the Golf Channels “Golf Academy Live.” I had my own radio show and television show “Brad Redding on Golf.”
As my career grew so need my name. Clubs from across the eastern state came calling. But as always I was wanting to experience different opportunities and challenges. I accepted the Director Golf Instruction at Hartefeld National Golf Clubvin Avondale, PA and its sister club Mountain Branch Golf Club in Joppa Town, MD. Here I was much more than teachng professional. I trained instructors, designed programs, reports and still giving over 1,300 lessons a year. My name grew writing instruction articles for Golf Magazine, Sports Illustrated and USA Today.
Whiles I loved being at these great clubs being a southern boy I hated the cold winter and so did my wife and son. As it happens I received and email from the PGA that a club in Myrtle Beach was looing to add a golf academy to their amenities. I accepted the Director of Golf Instruction at Grande Dunes Resort Club in Myrtle Beach, SC. This was even bigger experience and challenge. The club wanted to bring golfer’s all across the nation to take instruction and play golf. I designed packages for 1 day, 3 day and 5 day schools that included: instruction, golf, hotel accommodations, and meals. The golf academy was very successful and we developed and huge following. I was responsible for training instructors, designing programs, hotels negotiations, reports and teaching 1,300 on site instruction. I continued to write articles for Golf Magazine, and the local paper “The Sun News.”
As most things times change, The company that owned the club sold it and the management company wanted to bring their own instructor. With out blinking and eye I had 3 clubs in the Myrtle Beach area wanting me to come to their club. I decided on one as an independent contractor. Establish Brad Redding Golf Instruction. My business flourished as my students followed me to the new location. I was giving 1,600 one hour lessons a year. One day my wife and I were talking and decided it was time to return home.
Back home to Knoxville, TN. I had some clubs that wanted me to bring my golf instruction business to them. I said, “Been there done that.” I wanted to so something different. I found and good range and set up shop there. Being the only instructor at the range I had the perfect spot for Brad Redding Golf Instruction. I also had people in Myrtle Beach who still wanted to work with me. So I bring all my technology to a club there one weekend each month. There was another course in Brrooknneal, VA that wanted me to teach there. The owner of the course had brought his sons down to work with me in Myrtle Beach. I go there one weekend each month. This was working so well I contacted a club in Athens, TN. The owner new of me and me accolades and said when can you start. I go there one weekend each month. Finally Tennessee National in Loudon, TN asked me join them. I go there one weekend each month. All of this and still teaching at my home base at Target Golf Practice and Training Facility.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ever obstacles is really and leaning opportunity.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
