Conversations with Kennedy Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Jackson.

Hi Kennedy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in Georgia by divorced parents. During my high school years, my dad, who was in the military, got stationed in Southern Maryland. I moved out after high school to Annapolis, Maryland, and got my cosmetology license from The Temple of Annapolis: a Paul Mitchell Partnership School.
The school was an amazing experience and taught me a lot!
Sadly though, they actually did not train me much in men’s cuts.
As I was finishing up my schooling, the owner of the Annapolis Sport Clips approached me at my local job and asked if I would come work for him. Sport Clips had a training course that I would attend before I could actually cut on the floor. This gave me the courage to take a step toward learning how to do men’s cuts.
I was given a management role shortly after completing a few classes and learning to take clients on a regular basis. Sport Clips gave me the opportunity to go to Las Vegas for a work event, where I met industry trendsetters and watched some amazing presentations on how to build a better business. I was also part of the team helping present a class.
Working for that company was a great step in my journey. With my first paycheck, I was able to buy a camera to take with me to conventions. I decided to turn cosplay photography into a hobby and began growing an Instagram following.
But when the pandemic hit, everything changed. My former roommate and I decided to move back down South to be closer to our families. Once I got here, I applied to Pellissippi State Community College to pursue a photography degree while working at Sport Clips on the side.
After graduating with my photography degree, I decided it was time to do more in my career path. I worked for a few companies around Knoxville and trained up on razor work.
One day, it was time for me to find a place that fits me just right and I came across a room for rent in Stay Sharp off Clinton Hwy. Lindsey Van Rennes welcomed me with open arms and helped me start my small business: In A Box Men’s Grooming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road on the path to success. Success comes at the cost of failure, and I’m still learning that lesson every day. I’ve faced many struggles throughout my career; however, the biggest one has always been my mental stability—reminding myself that I have the strength to achieve anything I truly believe in.
It also means staying away from toxic situations, even when those situations come from within. You can always be your worst enemy—or your biggest cheerleader.
Every day, I choose to keep showing up for myself, and that alone is a form of success.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For my men’s grooming business, I specialize in beard detailing with razor work and cool shave designs. Hot towel shaves aren’t as common, so I’ve made them an option for anyone who wants that extra touch.
Designs are the kids favorite, but I’ve had my fair share of men request designs as well! I’ve had people request power T’s, American flags, and sports numbers—I even once shaved Taylor Swift’s signature into my clients hair!

For photography, I primarily specialize in cosplay photography. I’ve been going to conventions since 2016 and got my first camera in 2018. Even before owning a camera, I was capturing moments at conventions; But, it wasn’t until years later that I truly recognized photography as a passion.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I feel as though everyone I’ve come in contact with has helped shape who I am today. I’ve had so much love and support from my family, friends, old coworkers, past teachers, and former jobs. My clients have been a massive encouragement to continue my journey, and I’m so thankful for all of them—especially those I’ve had throughout the four (almost five) years I’ve lived here in Knoxville.
My mom helped shape who I am and how I carry myself. My brother and sister taught me to share and how to treat others. my step-dad reminded me that anyone can be your buddy. Everyone in my life deserves credit; however, my dad will probably always take the lead. He has given me the opportunity to become who I want to be in life and is always there when I need him most. I love you all and thank you.
