Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Mason.
Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always interested in art, especially letter art. If I had a pen in my hand, I was always doodling. Fast forward to 2017 when I got married (I hadn’t even thought of owning my own calligraphy business at this time). But because I was so used to lettering, I created all the signage at my wedding. My husband really encouraged me and suggested I open a business where I designed and created signs for other peoples’ weddings. At the time, I thought it was a little silly and told him there was no way people would actually pay me to create signs for them. But I decided to create an Instagram, where all my projects were in one place. In all of that, Elms Lettering was born. Now I have a business where I create paper and stationery pieces and signage for many different events. A place where I’m given the opportunity to put my love for design and art to use, and make peoples’ ideas come to life. I truly never could have dreamed up the places and experiences this business has taken me to. I am so thankful for the people who pushed and encouraged me, and cheered me on along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it has been a pretty smooth road for Elms Lettering. I don’t know that I would consider it a struggle, but it has been an adjustment learning how to facilitate business through social media. Most business for Elms Lettering comes from Instagram. So it has definitely required some learning how to bring business from social media into real life events and projects.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Elms Lettering specializes in stationery and paper goods, custom calligraphy projects, and event signage. I always tell my clients, whatever you can dream up for me to write on or create, we can make it happen! I’m most proud of the relationships that have been built along the way. I love creating special pieces and making peoples’ ideas come to life; however, it’s the experiences and relationships that are established during the process that means the most. I am so thankful that people trust me to create these special pieces for them, and I try my best to make that known from the beginning. I love working with other vendors to make the overall end product for an event come together. I think an event is seamless when everyone works as a team, and cheers each other on along the way.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the most surprising thing about Elms Lettering is that it wasn’t my idea, it was my husbands!
Pricing:
- Since each calligraphy project is completely different than the next, pricing depends on the project and what is needed. I love getting to sit down and talk through ideas and projects. Each event is new and unique, and that’s pretty exciting!
