Tyler , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story is unfolding daily, and we’ve been sharing it through Five & Hoek since 2013, when we joined the world of third wave coffee with our friend Erich. We’re a family owned and operated small business and we’re raising our two cute kids in a coffee shop. For the past decade we have been growing in our coffee knowledge, community experience, and growing as a family too! Our kiddos love visiting the coffee shop often and if you ask them, they’ll tell you all we do is make delicious coffee & muffins. We love being able to live out our dream day in and day out in Wheaton, IL & Knoxville, TN. Our coffeeshop opened in 2023 in Knoxville and 2013 in Wheaton Illinois. Tyler & Beth own Five & Hoek along with their friend Erich. We are from Illinois, but the mountains of TN were calling, so we decided our second location should be here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is it ever smooth? We have learned a lot through our mistakes, and have made plenty since 2013. We continue to grow each day and are thankful that we have a business that can support us as well as many others. From build out delays, to operating a business through Covid, we have had to adapt & change things, all while staying true to who we are and our mission to provide a peaceful community space for relationships & excellent coffee worthy of slow sipping.
We’ve been impressed with Five & Hoek Coffee, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Five & Hoek (Hook). We roast coffee that is ethically sourced, carefully tested and curated by our QC team, and served with love. We do this by bringing in multiple coffee samples at a time, tasting through them with our QC team before selecting which coffees you will enjoy most!
We partner with importers & farmers directly who care most about quality coffee and caring for the farmers involved in growing & processing the coffee, and assuring that the coffee is sourced responsibly.
We roast our coffee to highlight where the coffee came from (Terroir), aiming ultimately for sweetness and balance, not to highlight roasting characteristics like smoke, char, or burnt flavors. We make all of our syrups in house with natural ingredients to highlight each season. We not only have coffee shops to share our products with you, but also ship coffee nationwide to your doorstep and sell our coffee to restaurants and offices. What matters most to you?
Since we started this company in 2013 we have always been about 3 things: Coffee, relationships, and community. We have always focused on doing our best to bring people into the fold of Five & Hoek who love coffee, and love people.
We exist to partner with producers growing amazing coffee, and sharing that beautiful product with you! If we weren’t able to share what we love with you, then we would not be doing this! We are excited to have you alongside us in this journey of coffee, relationships, and community.
