Today we’d like to introduce you to Kutler Blackwell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I would say my story really started before graduating. By Senior year of high school, I had finally become an asset to our football team. 3 weeks before my first game of senior year, I was sitting at my desk playing Xbox with some buddies and my knee locked up. I called for my parents and they rushed me to the hospital, and long story short we were told that my meniscus had been torn all the way through. Up until this point, my entire plan was the go to college on a scholarship. Once I tore my meniscus that was no longer and option and that sent me to one of the darkest places in my life where I fell into depression. Fortunately, I had recently started dating my now soon to be wife and she drove 45 minutes to my house after school every single day to sit by my side. She did this for at least a month when she finally pulled me out of the depression. That’s when I decided I wasn’t going to give up on life, but take my passion that i had for football and apply it somewhere else… My business.
I graduated from McMinn County High School in 2022 and jumped straight into real estate, getting licensed immediately after finishing school. Not long after, I realized two things: 1. I loved helping people , and 2. people didn’t trust an 18 year old with no experience to sell their house. That’s what led me to start McMinn Moving N’ More in August 2022.
At first, it was just me, a truck rental, a couple of buddies and a willingness to outwork everyone. I handled moves during the day, took real estate calls in between jobs (or even on the job), and followed up with leads at night. Both businesses grew faster than I expected. On the real estate side, I expanded my systems, invested heavily in lead generation, and learned how to convert at a high level. On the moving company side, I kept improving the service, building processes, and earning trust locally until we became known as the reliable, high-integrity movers realtors could confidently refer.
Over the last few years, I’ve been extremely intentional about scaling, systematizing, and separating the two businesses so they can stand on their own. I’ve built detailed SOPs, invested in CRMs and automations, created value-add programs like “List With Me, Move For Free” and the “Love It or Leave It Guarantee,” and am currently preparing our company to handle long distance moves.
Along the way, I won the Athens Chamber “Shark Tank” pitch competition, which allotted me enough capital to develop a clear plan for expanding. From FMCSA compliance and long-distance capability to hiring, leadership development, and financial systems, the grant boosted our momentum tremendously.
Through all of this, one principle has stayed consistent: I want to build businesses that genuinely put the client first.
Where I am today is the result of hard work, taking calculated risks early, learning quickly, constantly refining my systems, and being extremely grateful to God for the opportunities I’ve been given.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was anything but a smooth road. I never went to college or had family in business. I had two hard working parents that loved me and encouraged me to do better than they did. With that said, we made plenty of mistakes to get to where we are.
One of these mistakes costed us $10,000. I call it tuition at the school of hard knocks.
We were doing our first commercial move for my accounting company. Moving them from one office to another. It was day 2 of multiple long 8 hour days but everything was going okay. We were wearing down so the client recommended we start sliding the desk. So, we did just that. One after another, we finally were on the last desk. As we load it into the elevator, we look back and see we had burnt a whole in the carpet from where the desk was being slid. This was commercial carpet that could not be seamed together.
The best part, I missed a call from my insurance agent to bind coverage that SAME DAY.
Long story short, we stuck to our word that we would make any wrong doings right, and on march 16th 2023, we paid 10,080 dollars to recarpet the entire floor of that building.
