Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek and Marina.
Hi Derek and Marina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Our family consists of Derek, Marina, Nash, and the Navy. Ever since Derek was a young kid, he had a knack for building, creating, and fixing. He was born and raised in Eastern Washington, working on the family ranch raising cattle and alfalfa. His interest in construction only grew as he did. His journey in the construction industry began at 18 when he started as a carpenter foreman and then progressed to superintendent and general contractor. We knew in our hearts that we wanted to leave the West Coast so that our kids could grow up on more property and have a slower pace of life, so we decided to move to Tennessee. We sold our first home in a suburban neighborhood, moved into a 600-square-foot space with family, and saved all we could that year while our house was being constructed. After getting licensed as a General Contractor here, we finally started our business, Wiersma Homes Co. We are starting our first project, a 1.1 million dollar home that begins this month. We’ve also launched several guides that help families throughout the U.S. through the design selection and construction process. Those can be found on our Instagram, @wiersmahomes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a long, bumpy road, but we knew that with the Lord as our guide, He would provide for us, and He has. Before we were about to list our first house in the suburbs of Washington, a record-breaking flood destroyed everything. We lost most of our belongings and had to remodel the entire house. After months of hard work, we could finally move back in and put it on the market. It sold in one week!
We’ve been impressed with Wiersma Homes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
When Derek and I started Wiersma Homes, we aimed to help families. We know that families are moving here from all over the U.S. for the same reasons we did. We know they want a better life, and we want to be there for them along the way. We also know that some local families want to build their dream homes but don’t know how. We also want to be there for them and work within their budget. What sets us apart is the personal touch. We think outside the box when making our clients feel special. We set them up from the beginning with several checklists and guides to help them get organized. We provide them with a Pre-Bid Selection Guide that helps us get them the most accurate bid possible. We build close relationships with our families and get to know them and their dreams. That is something missing in the contractor realm.
Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
The Bible is our number one. After that, we use Donald Miller’s books and podcasts as our guide for business. And third, Instagram is a way to connect and share our work with others.
