Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Gould.
Hi Meg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved making art for as long as I can remember- watercolors as a toddler and painting on an easel in my parents’ old “computer room” as a child. I begged my dad to turn our basement into an art studio for my 13th birthday. Art was always my favorite subject in school.
Today, I have a studio space set up in my own home where I spend as much time as possible working on various creative projects. My favorite medium to work with is acrylic paint, I find it to be very forgiving when I make a mistake.
Currently, I work as a social media specialist for a medispa in West Knoxville. While I love the opportunity to be creative and to design beautiful digital art through social media posts, I dream of being able to leave this position behind so that I can focus on my artwork full time.
One day, I hope to open my own studio/gallery. I daydream of space with huge glass windows in the front to display artwork. I imagine having private rooms that can be used by myself and other creatives to bring our masterpieces to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been so fortunate to grow up with parents and a community of loved ones that support my artwork. I know that there will always be people who doubt that art is worth pursuing or who simply don’t like the look of my artwork. It’s easy to become discouraged or to take it personally when somebody is critical of my work.
But I get through it by reminding myself that I’m proud of the work I create and if somebody else does not like it, that it’s not my job to make them like it. I remind myself to create for myself and for the people who will appreciate it. This is the ongoing struggle of being an artist of any kind.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a social media marketing specialist at a medical spa. I love getting to be creative and design digital artwork. Learning about website design is also very interesting to me. However, I hope to eventually be able to leave this position in order to pursue art full-time.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I primarily use Instagram and TikTok to find other artists and creatives. Following creators who share inspiring content and tips for merging their art with business has been very eye-opening. Social media is free and can open up so many networking opportunities just from a simple follow/comment/message.
