Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Caraway.
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started decorating cookies in 2018 as something fun to contribute to a women’s group for church. I had never attempted sugar cookies with royal icing before, but I had seen them at another event and became determined I could do it too. I taught myself everything I could by looking at blogs, YouTube videos and trial and error. Eventually people began asking if I could make cookies for parties, birthdays and all sorts of other occasions. It all evolved from there and I have loved every second of it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has mostly been smooth sailing from the start. Royal icing can be a little tricky and there are lots of different techniques. I love the challenges of learning new things, but sometimes there’s a steep learning curve. One of the main challenges is icing consistency. Every technique requires its own unique consistency to get the best outcome.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home baker who specializes in custom decorated sugar cookies. I make cookies for all sorts of occasions. Birthday parties, baby showers, weddings, bridal showers and engagements are some of the events I get asked to create for regularly. I’m most proud of my ability to design and create cookies from scratch. Customers send me inspiration photos or invitations, and I can customize a cookie set from there. I make most of my own cookie cutters, so the sets are incredibly personalized. I’m also proud to offer 100% dye free options, which I feel sets me apart from other cookiers in the area. I love creating goodies to help others celebrate big moments in their lives.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I think the most important lesson I have learned along the way is to have as much fun as possible. I used to stress about every little detail. I would literally have dreams about cookie designs! I learned a few techniques to take away some of the stress and now I just try to enjoy every cookie set as much as I can!
