Check Out Kari Cook’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari Cook.

Hi Kari, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a plus-size woman in her early 40s who hasn’t always loved herself and been as confident as I am today. I had a friend talk me into a boudoir shoot thinking it might be a confident booster, I was also newly married and we thought it might be a nice gift for my husband.

I thought photoshoots were only for women of a certain size and dreaded the shoot until it actually happened. The photographer was fantastic, she put my mind at ease and made me feel beautiful. And the pictures were fantastic too. I was totally hooked! I started reaching out to other photographers, creating a digital profile, and building a brand.

In the meantime, I was sending my sets to publications and getting them published here and internationally. Currently, I’ve been published over 30 times with 8 covers. I’ve talked several friends into photoshoots and they are happy they did it.

Many women my age don’t believe they can do it and there is a stigma with how models should look, I want to break that.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No. I’ve changed a bit. I’m still the same humorous and easy-going woman, I’m just more confident. I did happen to lose a few friends along the way that couldn’t handle my new level of confidence.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m not really “known” for anything. I consider myself a later in life model. I think it’s important for kids today to know that you can do what you want at any age, even if you come back to it 20 years later. My hairstyle sets me apart from everyone else. Kids today need to know that you don’t have to look like everyone else, being original is okay!

My hairstyle set me apart from everyone else.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t let society’s definitions of how a model should look or be affect how you think of yourself and the pursuit of your passions. Love the skin you’re in!
