Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Tourville
Hi Ashley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After graduating with a marketing degree in 2018, I started my career in the corporate world, but I always had a deep passion for creating with my camera. Over time, I found myself constantly thinking about photography while working my day job. When the pandemic hit, I saw an opportunity to channel my creativity, and photography became my outlet. I began taking photos almost every day, and it was a way for me to escape and get outside. However, I didn’t initially think becoming a full-time photographer was something that could happen for me— it felt more like a dream reserved for ‘other people.’
But my husband was incredibly supportive and encouraged me to keep building my photography business while working full-time. I kept at it until it eventually reached a point where I couldn’t balance both anymore. By March of 2023, I was able to take the leap and pursue photography full-time. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings, newborns, and everything in between, which has been both challenging and rewarding. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful that I took that leap into something that has become such a meaningful part of my life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest hurdles I faced on my journey to becoming a full-time photographer was simply believing in myself enough to take the leap. After spending so much time in the corporate world, I had grown comfortable in that role, and stepping away from that stability was daunting. There was a lot of self-doubt, and I often questioned if I was ready. I kept telling myself that photography was for ‘other people,’ not for me—but deep down, I knew I had worked hard and put in the effort to build something real. I had to reassure myself that I had invested the time, energy, and resources into creating a career I could be proud of. The transition wasn’t easy, but once I made that decision to go full-time, it felt like I was finally living my truth, and that’s been incredibly rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a photographer, I specialize in weddings and elopements, which truly bring me joy as I get to capture some of the most important moments in people’s lives. However, I also have a passion for photographing newborns and families. I love creating a calming presence for my clients, allowing them to relax and enjoy their day while I capture these beautiful memories. Additionally, I have a special connection with animals, having always been a pet owner myself, so I make it a priority to offer high-quality pet photography. I believe that every person deserves to have beautiful images with their pets, and that’s something I’m really passionate about.
One of the aspects of my business that I’m especially proud of is my commitment to giving back. Each year, I offer complimentary ‘Celebration of Life’ sessions for pet owners who want to honor and remember their beloved animals before they pass. I know how special the bond between pets and their owners is, and these sessions provide a meaningful way to preserve those memories during a difficult time. It’s something I hold close to my heart, and I’m grateful to be able to offer this service to help people treasure those final moments with their pets.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One thing I’ve learned throughout my journey is just how important it is to have support and to also support others in the industry. Early on, I realized that success isn’t about competing with others; it’s about fostering a sense of community. Building relationships with fellow photographers and creatives has not only helped me grow professionally, but it has also shown me the power of collaboration. We all have unique strengths, and when we lift each other up, we can all thrive together. It truly is about community over competition, and that mindset has made all the difference in my career.
