Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Erickson
Hi Jim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was an artist as a kid, but stopped because my brother was much better than I was. Like they say, comparison is the thief of joy.
Probably around 2018 I started doodling again for fun. Eventually had a design I wanted as a sticker to slap on my hardhat so I ordered a small batch online. I figured I’d sell the rest of the batch so mine was paid for, and it’s just sorta ramped up slowly but surely since then.
Eventually I hope to make it my full time job, but right now it’s just something I enjoy. I get to vend cool shows, meet cool people, sometimes make a few bucks too.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s hard to make a living selling stickers, $3 at a time. One day you’ll vend a great show and it you think to yourself “I’m gaining traction. If this keeps up I can do this full time”
Then the next show doesn’t go great. Then maybe the one after that doesn’t go great either and you start to question if you should keep going.
It can be a bit of a roller coaster.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I struggle to describe my work, so I normally say “lowbrow doodles”
A mix of fun characters, a little humor, some art related to causes I care about.
I’m most proud when I see someone at a show who gets it. When they laugh at something that I thought was funny, or you see them excited about the same causes.
I think what sets me apart (which is probably a stretch) is that I don’t take things too seriously. Most of my art isn’t deep. It’s dumb. It’s fun.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m still trying to figure out how to become successful. I’ll let you know if I do. I’m having fun in the meantime.
