Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Gentry.
Hi Morgan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
How I started, well, I never really knew I wanted to do hair. I knew I wanted to go to a university just so I could move out and be on my own, but the school never came easy for me. But I ended up not getting into the university I wanted to go to so my next option was beauty school. I always loved doing hair, just didn’t realize it. I loved fixing my mamaws hair growing up, and I always braided the girl’s hair on the bus before soccer games. But just didn’t know that’s what I wanted to do. So, I went to school at Tennessee School of Beauty in Knoxville. And I loved it. I was never really smart in school, so hair was the only thing I understood and loved doing it.
It came so easy. Then I started at a commission elite salon in Knoxville. I started as an assistant and did that for a year, and I did not like it at all. Where I’m from, a lot of people work in factory’s, and I remember calling my dad crying wanting to quit, and wanting to go work at a factory, and he told me not to give up, that this was gonna be the worse part, that everyone starts at the bottom. Looking back, I am so thankful for the assistant program. I learned a lot and it got me where I am today, but during the time it didn’t feel that way, all I could think about was money. And money is not something you chase.
God is the only thing you should ever chase. So then, I was on my own doing hair, we’ll then when I was 20 my dad passed away out of nowhere from a massive heart attack, and I remember telling my boss that my world was over. I wanted to give up on everything in my life. But I just leaned on the lord and he helped me push out of that horrible time in my life. Since then I had worked there for six years, had an assistant, and all that. But I just felt like it was time for the next step in my career. So, I went to a booth rental salon, and it has been such a blessing, I was so surprised at all my clients that followed me and the new ones I got to. I can sit here and say that I did it all on my own, but I didn’t. I give all the glory to God for my career.
I was at a place in my life where I wanted to give up on everything because I didn’t have my dad, but God gave me a Heavenly Father that will always be there and reminded me of that and still does every day. I encourage anyone starting a career to work hard, don’t give up, and if you want something then go get it. Don’t expect anything to be given to you, but most importantly never chase anything but God, putting God in the center of your life will only lead you to everything God has in store for you, which will always be nothing but GOOD.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing my clientele showing up on time, ’cause I used to always be late. Being successful is never easy, it’s hard work. This job always requires love and respect for your clients.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Cosmetologist/Hairstylist I specialize in lived-in blonde, balayage, and hair extensions. I’m most happy with the relationship I have with my clients, it’s not just doing hair, it’s friendship, memories, girl time.
