Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Boggs
Martha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I went to the University here and was always attracted to the downtown area. There was a very eclectic jazz club in the old city I loved.
After college I took a job as the general manager of The Bistro next door to the Bijou theatre and have been here since 1993. I bought the business in 2009. The focus was already chalkboard specials so I began using local and seasonal products.
Lunch and concert nights were pretty busy but evenings were slow so I and implemented a jazz program. Early on it was only students that played for food, beer and tips but soon the instructors wanted to play here so we have had a great program for about 20 years.
We love being part of our little community in downtown.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had several unforseen setbacks. The theatre next door has closed for renovations TWICE which has been messy and bad for business. There have been street scape and construction projects downtown which limited access to the building and of course a pandemic to get through. B
I have enjoyed good health and a loyal staff so we have done ok.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are best known for providing a healthy dining alternatives for our guests. A great space that supports live musicians, and a safe work space for the LGBT community. We have our own organic garden that produces many of our vegetables that we use to make our own hot sauce and other condiments and some of the most beautiful tomatoes you can find anywhere.
We believe what sets us apart is having a seasonal menu that constantly evolves and being part of a very historic building. There is an iconic recling nude behind the bar which is made from repurposed architectural items.
This space has been an eating and drinking establishment since 1818.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have wonderful friends and customers that have been invaluable for me. Primarily women.
