Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie King.
Hi Leslie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Leslie King, and I grew up in South Knoxville. I love the outdoors and traveling. I also love volunteering for Catalyst Sports which takes people with physical disabilities biking, paddling, and climbing. I love helping others, providing solutions, and conquering obstacles. I have worked in healthcare for 27 years. My career started as a Prosthetist/ Orthotists making prosthetic limbs and custom body braces; I enjoy working with my hands and watching the first steps with a new device. After 25 years, I made a career change as I grew a passion for preventative healthcare and started Knoxville Thermography.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One challenge was opening a small business during a pandemic and getting the word out about where you are and what you do. The biggest obstacle is that Thermography is not mainstream or covered by most insurance plans, so we are educating the public and healthcare professionals on its benefits. Fortunately, the MDs and DOs that interpret the images are willing to talk with our local healthcare providers to discuss how it works and the findings.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, or DITI, is an imaging technique for displaying and measuring body temperature. It is an adjunctive tool for detecting disease, injury, and infection. There is a high degree of symmetry in a normal healthy body. Subtle abnormal temperature asymmetries can be easily identified and may indicate pathology or dysfunction. We use a heat-seeking FDA-approved camera that works in a temperature-controlled room. There is no radiation, pain, or contact, and non-invasive. Thermography is used to diagnose heart disease, various cancers, nerve impingement, blood clots forming, stress fractures, diabetes, nutritional diseases, and many other forms of inflammatory disease. We are not perfectly healthy today and are diagnosed tomorrow. It takes time for the disease to grow. One of the biggest benefits is sending our images to a group of MD/DO studying thermography. They read the images and send the patient a full report on the findings and what to do next.
Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
I have been lucky with support from a couple of people that helped me along in the journey of opening my own business. I learned about Thermography from Agape Holistic, owned by my sister, Kelly Blankenship, and uses light therapy and biofeedback as a few modalities for preventative healthcare. She gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and start Knoxville Thermography. Also, my Chiropractor at The Health Factory, Dr. Barrett, was familiar with thermography and was excited about having this service in Knoxville. He encouraged me in this direction and wanted us to have a home within his offices.
