Meet Kenny Dean of Alcoa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Dean

Hi Kenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the world of exercise science and basketball is a tale of passion, perseverance, and growth. It all began with a fervent interest in exercise science, a field that captivated me with its potential to transform lives. Armed with this knowledge and an unwavering love for basketball, I embarked on the challenging path of building a client base from scratch. The road was tough, but my dedication never faltered.

Basketball wasn’t just a game for me—it was a calling. I started modestly, training a handful of kids, infusing each session with my own passion and insights. As their skills flourished and their excitement grew, word spread fast. My small group quickly expanded, driven by the visible results and the enthusiasm of my young athletes.

The success of this initial effort sparked a bigger idea. I took a bold step and created a team for my son and his friends. That first season was nothing short of exhilarating. Watching these kids grow, both as players and individuals, was a deeply fulfilling experience. The achievements of that season were more than personal victories; they were the seeds of a larger vision.

By the end of the year, interest in the program had surged. Parents and kids alike were eager to be part of what we were building. This groundswell of enthusiasm led me to partner with my friend Cole McKeehan. Together, we founded True Hoops, a venture born from our shared love for basketball and our dedication to nurturing young talent.

Our inaugural year with True Hoops was a whirlwind of excitement and hard work. We launched seven teams, each brimming with potential and energy. The season was a tapestry of unforgettable moments, growth, and achievement. It was clear that we had tapped into something special.

Today, my days are a vibrant mix of activities that keep me both challenged and inspired. Mornings are spent at Get Fit Maryville in Maryville, TN, where I work with older clients, guiding them towards their fitness goals and helping them feel their best. Afternoons shift to the energetic world of young athletes, where I focus on developing their basketball skills and nurturing their passion for the game. And amid all this, I continue to coach, finding immense joy in mentoring and shaping the next generation of players.

What drives me is the diversity and dynamism of my work. Each day is a new adventure, filled with opportunities to impact lives and witness growth. Whether I’m helping a seasoned client improve their fitness or guiding a young athlete to reach their potential, every moment is a reminder of why I love what I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. In the early days, I battled intense self-doubt, often wondering if I was truly capable of inspiring others. There were weeks when my calendar was empty, and I felt like I was shouting into the void, desperate for someone to believe in my vision.

The juggling act of managing my personal life alongside the demands of building a business often left me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Yet, it was during those darkest moments that I found my resolve. Each setback became a lesson, fueling my determination to push forward. These challenges not only shaped my journey but ignited a fire within me that continues to drive my passion for training and mentoring young athletes through TrueHoops. Looking back, I now see those struggles as the very foundation of my success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m deeply passionate about helping both older clients and young athletes reach their fullest potential through personalized training and mentorship. In the mornings, I focus on training older clients, specializing in functional fitness and overall wellness. I’m known for helping them improve their strength, mobility, and endurance, tailoring programs to fit their individual needs and lifestyles. My goal is to empower them to lead healthier, more active lives.

Later in the day, after school, I shift my focus to young athletes, specializing in skill development for basketball players. I create personalized training programs that enhance not only their on-court performance but also their mental resilience and teamwork skills. I prioritize fostering a supportive environment where each athlete feels valued and understood.

What truly sets me apart is my ability to train athletes and connect them with my nonprofit travel basketball program if they need a team to play for. This unique opportunity allows them to apply what they’ve learned in training while competing at a higher level, further enhancing their skills and experience in a supportive team environment.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients, regardless of their age, and the milestones they achieve. Watching them overcome challenges and celebrate their successes—whether it’s an older client reaching a fitness goal or a young athlete mastering a skill—drives my passion daily. It’s not just about the game or fitness; it’s about helping individuals of all ages develop lifelong values and a love for movement.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking is essential for growth and transformation. It’s often uncomfortable, but that’s where the magic happens. One of my biggest risks was starting the nonprofit travel basketball program True Hoops alongside my incredible team, Cole McKeehan and Georgia Miller. We faced doubts about funding and community support, but we believed in creating a space for young athletes to thrive.

Equally daunting was the decision to rely solely on my training business to support my family financially. The uncertainty of not having a backup job weighed heavily on me, but I knew that taking this leap was essential for my personal and professional growth.

After extensive research and collaboration, we launched the basketball program, which blossomed beyond our expectations. Watching young players gain confidence and hone their skills has been incredibly rewarding.

I also encourage my clients—older adults and young athletes alike—to step outside their comfort zones. Whether it’s trying a new exercise or competing in a tournament, these small risks can lead to significant breakthroughs.

I am a risk-taker, and I’ve learned that embracing calculated risks can lead to profound opportunities and lasting impacts. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that we often discover our true potential.
