Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Rachel West.
Hi J. Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is J. Rachel West and I’m a Brand & Marketing Strategist. I help businesses align their brand and marketing to increase customer acquisition and retention, scale sustainably, and increase brand recognition.
My journey began in 2013 when I won a Red Ribbon award from Dollywood for my annual souvenir mug sales. My boss asked what I was doing to sell so many, and I couldn’t answer him. I didn’t know. On my way home, I called my grandmother, and she said, “Rachel, that’s called marketing. You can make a career out of that.”
From then on, I became obsessed with marketing, branding, and business. That passion led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree from the University of Westminster. While my degrees provided my foundation, the single most significant resource that shaped my entrepreneurial mindset was/is traveling.
To date, I’ve visited 67 countries, witnessing entrepreneurship firsthand across vastly different cultures, regions, beliefs, and peoples. I didn’t just visit tourist sites either; I lived in England and Germany, studying international business and marketing. I witnessed what multi-generational business ownership looks like in London. I learned how to communicate with people, even when there was a language barrier, in Tanzania. I analyzed billboards in Egypt and tram ads in Austria. I observed buying habits and patterns, and learned what it meant to do business with one another, no matter where we come from. These 13+ years of global perspective in business and marketing allow me to help founders see beyond their local markets and build strategies that can scale anywhere.
I got here because I noticed a recurring problem: most businesses aren’t integrating their brand with their marketing. This misalignment causes issues in the business like: financial instability, ineffective visibility tactics, team friction, profit leaking, and more. Not to mention the impact it has on the owner- sleep deprivation, burnout and stress, pressure to stay ahead and innovative, imposter syndrome, etc.
Now, I spend my time helping companies stabilize and scale by uncovering the root cause of their friction. Whether I’m working with a founder in a private 1:2:1 strategy session, speaking on a stage, or recording a podcast, my goal is the same: to help businesses take action, stay top of mind, and scale up.
I believe in the ripple effect of success. When I help clients, they, in turn, help their clients, their networks, and their people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. In fact, the most challenging part of my journey was the very thing that led to my recent rebrand: realizing I was out of balance with my own brand and marketing. For years, I operated purely on the marketing side. I had the skills, the 13+ years of experience, and two degrees in business, but I was helping everyone with everything. I fell into the trap of regurgitating recycled marketing advice because I believed that’s what the industry expected and what clients wanted from me.
The struggle was a fundamental lack of alignment. I felt a deep disconnect from my work because I was operating from a place of fear. I was afraid that if I told a lead what I know they needed versus what they wanted, they wouldn’t sign on. I said yes to projects that didn’t light me up and wrestled with more “what-if” questions than I’d like to admit. I was helping others scale their dreams while personally facing the exact burnout and frustration I was supposed to be solving for clients.
Transitioning from a traditional marketer to a Brand & Marketing Strategist was/is a steep climb. It’s terrifying to stop helping “everyone” so you can start helping your right people. I had to shift from being a general marketing resource to a Brand & Marketing Strategist for business leaders who feel that “something is off” but can’t quite name it. To do that, I had to put my own business on the table. I had to look at the root causes of my own frustration and make the hard decision to stop looking at what others were doing and finally trust my intuition.
Because I believe in balance, I believe that these intense reflections and challenges are also here to teach me a positive lesson. I’ve come to realize that if I experienced this process, so have others. Now, I’m helping businesses find the balance between their brand and marketing that I had to fight to find for myself. I’ve been where they are, and I know exactly how to lead them out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe in community-focused marketing. To me, that means when we pour into our communities, our communities inevitably pour back into us. At the core of everything I do is a deep-seated belief in the power of the ripple effect. I’m passionate about helping business leaders succeed and watching them give back to their employees, communities, and networks. I get to help even more people when my clients reach their target audience, and I don’t take that privilege lightly.
I’m especially passionate about helping Knoxville business owners, leaders, and founders break free from the day-to-day grind. So many incredible entrepreneurs in our city are stuck “working in” their business rather than “working on” it. That’s when I come in to help them shift their focus toward long-term, scalable growth. How do we achieve that? By balancing the brand and marketing to create a stable and scalable business.
I don’t believe in forced marketing tactics. I believe growth shouldn’t feel like an uphill battle. When your brand and your marketing are out of sync, you business is forced to work overtime just to stay afloat. However, when they are in alignment, visibility becomes easy. Your target audience flows in naturally. And, your business works with you, not against you.
I’m most proud of helping leaders accept a simple but transformative truth: If it feels like you’re constantly forcing your business to work, something is out of balance. I take immense pride in being the person who helps business owners identify that friction and provide a roadmap to fix it. My goal is to show founders that while the imbalance is the problem, the solution is within their reach. It’s just a matter of doing something about it.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was the child who never stopped learning. I had an insatiable curiosity about the world and how things worked. I wasn’t content with just seeing the surface; I wanted to understand the mechanics and the reasons behind why things were the way they were. Looking back, that was the early version of the strategist I am today, always digging for the root cause, rather than just looking at the symptoms.
Personality-wise, I was, and still am, happiest when I’m outside. Whether I was exploring the woods or simply soaking in the landscape, nature was my first classroom. I think being in nature at a young age taught me two things that are now pillars of my business. In nature, everything is connected, and everything has a purpose. If one part of the ecosystem is off, the whole thing feels the impact. This is exactly how I view brands and businesses today. Being outdoors requires a certain level of stillness and observation. It developed my intuitive side, allowing me to read the room or a business environment and sense where the friction is before it even becomes a visible problem.
That childhood curiosity eventually outgrew the backyard and turned into a passion for global exploration. Whether I was in a small town in Tennessee or a bustling market in a foreign country, I was always observing, always learning, and always looking for the patterns that connect us all. I was a strategist in the making before I even knew what the word meant. My career isn’t just something I studied; it’s a natural extension of how I’ve always seen the world.
