Amberly Kelley-Dotson

Hi Amberly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
So many aspects of my life brought me to where I am now. I started practicing yoga in college to reconnect with my body and manage anxiety. I eventually enrolled in a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program without the intention of ever becoming a teacher. I wanted to learn more for my benefit. Towards the end of this program, I was already regularly substitute teaching group classes and loved teaching more than I ever thought I could. While I was teaching slower movement in my classes, my practice had become very physically demanding, and I ended up injuring myself in small ways: a shoulder injury, a previous knee injury flare-up, hip discomfort, but then finally, my left hamstring attachment tore while I was in a class. I was tired of getting hurt and almost walked away from yoga completely when I first met my now dear colleague Christina, who was studying yoga therapy and offered to work 1:1 with me. That work changed everything for me! I was finally comfortable in my body and moving with reduced pain and I was learning breathing techniques to manage anxiety. I had to know more. Three years later, I went through the same program she had (American Viniyoga Institute’s 500-hour Foundations for Teaching and Yoga Therapy) and started working with folks 1:1 in 2020. Later that year, I began having lots of health issues that I couldn’t get to the bottom of. I went to many different doctors and specialists who couldn’t help me get to the root cause. Finally, in 2022, I found a doctor who was both an MD and an Ayurvedic Doctor who helped me go through 6 long months of cleansing and rebuilding my body. Again, I had to learn more. In 2023, I enrolled in an Ayurveda Health Counselor program through Joyful Belly. Now, I have my business, Amble Wellbeing, where I combine all my training in yoga, ayurveda, holistic coaching, and my background in recreation therapy to work with folks to find holistic health.

Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
So much of my training came from a place of illness/injury and wanting to learn more to help myself. What I can offer my clients comes from my own experiences and difficulties. It’s been challenging, but that has allowed me to be profoundly empathetic. Beyond all that, being a small business owner and entrepreneur comes with its own challenges. I’m my own secretary, finance department, marketing department, etc. Some days are more challenging than others, but I wouldn’t change it!

As you know, we’re big fans of Amble Well-being. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
As I mentioned earlier, I draw on a range of techniques, including therapeutic yoga, ayurveda, holistic coaching, and recreation therapy, to enhance the well-being of individuals—enabling them to experience a profound sense of improvement in their bodies, minds, and hearts, ultimately fostering a deeper connection with themselves. I specialize in supporting folks: solving pain patterns in their bodies related to many different physical issues such as SI joint dysfunction, low back pain, foot issues like bunions and fallen arches, hypermobility, neck/shoulder tension, along with managing stress and anxiety, improving sleep issues, and looking at overall health and well-being. So many of our issues are connected, but it’s hard to see because we’re too close. I help my clients build awareness about their whole selves and then practice kindness to themselves with that additional awareness. I work with folks primarily 1:1, but I also love leading workshops, events, trainings, and continuing education opportunities.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m amidst a brand change that I’m excited about! My new business name, Amble Wellbeing, helps portray the multi-dimensional way I work with folks. The word amble is all about moving slowly, and that is what I’m hoping to bring to my clients. Slow shifts over time are how we create sustainable change for well-being. I’m also excited to complete my Ayurvedic Health Counselor program to add full Ayurveda Consultations to my offerings!
