Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Borrows.
Hi Alexa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out in nursing school at college in Philadelphia, PA (Drexel University), and I absolutely hated it. I knew I wanted to help people, but I wasn’t into the “blood and guts” that nursing required. I explored Behavioral Health Counseling and changed my major at the end of my sophomore year. I graduated two years later after doing internships at a homeless shelter and in children and youth family services.
I started working at a drug and alcohol rehab full-time in North New Jersey and worked on my master’s degree (Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling) online full-time through Walden University. To graduate, I was required to do a nine-month unpaid internship. Unfortunately, my dream internship at a behavioral health clinic for children and adolescents fell through but I found another opportunity with a private practice.
I continue to work for that private practice in New Jersey. Last year, we moved to Knoxville for my husband’s job and I have now opened up my own online private practice for TN residents.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I deal with is the stigma of working in mental health. When I wanted to change my major from nursing to behavioral health my family and friends said “but you’ll never make any money” and “you can help so many more people by being a nurse”.
But I haven’t found that to be true. I constantly am advocating for mental health therapy to be “normalized” and educating clients and their family/friends about the benefits of talking to someone about their struggles or issues.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about All Counseling Group, LLC?
All Counseling Group was established in 2021. I provide online talk therapy for clients physically located in Tennessee (very awesome that I get to meet clients from all over the state). I specialize in treating anxiety, OCD, phobias, eating disorders, life transitions, and gender dysphoria. My background is in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and my hope is to help my client live a more meaningful life.
ACT is a safe, evidence-based approach that helps you live in the moment and move toward more valued behaviors. By learning how to handle unwanted thoughts, feelings, and urges more effectively, clients can overcome even their most difficult problems, building a more satisfying life. I want my clients to feel safe and supported. My goal is to empower clients to identify and overcome personal obstacles that are preventing them from getting the most out of life. I strive to create a warm, supportive, empathetic, understanding, and most importantly, collaborative environment from the comfort of their own home.
I have met many people in the Knoxville area that are transplants, just like me! My therapy services may stand out from others as I do not take a religious approach and I am an ally with the LGBT+ community.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would like to share that I am accepting new clients (teens, adults, and elderly), all of my services are online and I offer a free phone consultation to see if we are a good fit for each other. One goal that I am working on is with my mini golden doodle, Dolly.
I am training for her to become a therapy service dog. I will provide Animal Assisted Therapy when I return to in-office sessions.
