Life & Work with Garrett Holloway of Maryville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Holloway.

Hi Garrett, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Most of the guys in the band have a similar story to mine. I got the rock n roll bug listening with my dad to his old vinyl record collection that he started building back in his school days. Listening to those albums made me want to pick up the guitar more than ever and start trying to learn those old tunes. I started a rock band at the beginning of high school and later joined a local country band before graduating. I love country music, but I wanted to get back to what was my first true love when it came to music. I was trying to get a new project together when I ran into Jared Jett randomly in the hallway between college classes. I hadn’t seen him in years, but we both went to Alcoa High School and had played together on numerous occasions. I remembered him being one of the best guitarists I had ever played with and told him to come over and sit in on this new project. He was hesitant, as he had not played regularly in a few years.

However, he agreed and got some gear together. I remember, within the first couple minutes of playing, everyone realized he was the real deal. From that moment, Jared and I have stuck together. Towards a common goal of trying to be the best band around and play the music that moves us. We played covers for years and decided to move towards original music. We formed The Dirty Gospel as an actual band that would include Jon Foulk on keys and later added Seth Chrisman on bass and Chris Potocik on Drums. Earlier this year, we got the opportunity to record with Grammy-nominated and Dove award-winning producer Travis Wyrick at Lakeside Studios, where we cut our first all-original album, Higher Ground. We released our debut southern rock album, Higher Ground, on Sept. 23 at The Shed Smokehouse & Juke Joint in Maryville, TN.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
In many ways, the pieces of the puzzle keep falling into place. But there have been obstacles, just as every band has had. Everything happens, and people are put into our lives for a reason. Recording an album is not easy; there were plenty of tense moments, tireless sessions, and long nights. However, the process has only made us stronger as a band, and we have something we can all be very proud of.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Some of the bandmates are full-time musicians, while others still have day jobs on the side. I was a firefighter for 5 years locally and recently switched to an insurance job that freed me up to be more active as a gigging band.

We love to hear about your fond memories of growing up.
Some of my best memories were listening to those records with my dad. But on more than one occasion, while my mom was running errands, we would listen downstairs, and he would crank those old Sansui speakers as loud as they would, at least it seemed like it. I remember one occasion my mom walked in; we couldn’t hear the garage door open over the music. She startled us and said she could listen to Back in Black by AC/DC clear coming down the road to turn into our cul-de-sac.
