Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyne Clark.
Hi Cheyne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Dragon Armor Games in 2018; I started it as a part-time business as something to do since I decided to leave my full-time job as a mechanical engineer to be at home with my son. I had gotten into woodworking the last few years, so it was good to start with. I decided to make game accessories for a few reasons; I knew I didn’t want to make custom furniture (I hate doing custom work) or cutting boards since that’s what alot of people go to. I knew I wanted to make smaller items and something that allowed me to be creative. I was an avid board and tabletop gamer, so game accessories seemed the natural answer. My first product was a playing card holder; a family member had seen a prototype I was working on and ordered a whole set. My catalog grew that first year to include dice towers, trays, and deck boxes. Since then, my product offerings have grown and gone through several iterations.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most obvious struggle was covid; I had to shut down since all in-person events were closed or severely reduced, and I had to be at home all day with my son, so there was no time to work anyway. Other than that, it was a lot of trying different things, mostly finding what venues and events were the best places to sell at.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I build primarily tabletop game (i.e., D&D) accessories out of hardwood. My main products include dice towers, trays, vaults, jails, and wooden bookmarks. I’m proud of my dice towers which include both large and small.
What makes you happy?
From a creative perspective, I love bringing my ideas to life. Then I love perfecting a design, making small changes to improve the quality, or finding an exciting way to modify it for a new look. I also love spending hours in the shop working alone, getting into that flow state. I’m happy spending time with my wife and son, reading books, spending time with friends, playing board/tabletop/video games, and being involved in my church.
