Hi Beth & Becky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

•Hetzel Art Studio, Originally opened in Feb. 2019, to serve as a place to teach classes and host workshops. We had a grand opening and invited all our talented friends from Cleveland and surrounding areas, and it was so amazing, the guests and artists asked us when the next show was. We never intended to serve as a gallery or host arts events, but we planned a years worth of shows and created a mission statement by the following day! We like to tell people that we accidently fell into it and continue meeting a need in Cleveland.
It a working fine art studio/gallery owned by sisters Rebecca Hetzel and M.B. (Beth)Hetzel. Originally from the Ohio Valley, they are both residents of Cleveland Tennessee and have worked locally for the past 21 years. They are the great grand daughters of Pennsylvania landscape artist George Hetzel.
•The gallery serves to showcase local professional and emerging artists with consistent events and exhibitions.
•It is a place for networking and nurturing talent. With 30 years of multidisciplinary art experience, they teach beginners as well as advanced classes, in all mediums for all ages.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. We’ve survived through 3 pandemic shut downs, illness, family deaths and divorce, with little to no financial assistance.
We’ve moved 3 times in 6 years, finally putting down roots at the Art House Project at the Old Woolen Mill. Beth, being on the Art is Here Partnership Board since 2020 helped put into motion and build up along with the other members.
It’s still a struggle in many ways, and takes a lot of personal sacrifice, but we love what we do and hope to continue for many years to come.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We provide opportunities for direct involvement and exchange with the visual arts, while cultivating a fun environment that nurtures creativity and growth as well as challenging and stimulating conversation with the artists.
We provide high-quality, themed exhibitions, group artist shows, and unique events in collaboration with local businesses and artists.
We keep our shows exciting and fresh! And always free & family friendly. We collaborate and network with surrounding area art businesses and artists to continually bring new talent to Cleveland.
We teach private art lessons that focus on personal and creative growth.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That were approachable! I think some people assume a gallery may be snobbish and not inclusive. We are neither of those things. We are working artists ourselves and know the struggles. We’re pioneers in a new breed of upcoming curators, who are ourselves artists first.
In fact, we’re thinking about dropping the “gallery” in our name to a more fun and more representative term in the future.
We connect people and thrive on supporting the talent we believe in and are always open to meeting new talent.
