Hidden Gems: Meet Amaya Linsey of Altruistic Love Candle Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaya Linsey.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Altruistic Love Candle Company originated in April 2020 after being furloughed from my job due to the pandemic. In the beginning, the idea was merely something to do for me to pass time. I have always loved candles, and I am guilty of standing outside of Bath & Body Works at 6 am to stock up on candles during the holiday season.

I had a list of DIY projects I wanted to try, but all the candlemaking videos on YouTube really stuck with me. I watched these videos for hours and ended up in several candlemaking groups on Facebook. I decided to sit down and talk to God to decide if this was something I wanted to pursue as a business endeavor. After a few times of praying and journaling, my company’s name came into fruition, and I became committed to making Altruistic Love Candle Company come to life.

Patience, prayer, and research have gotten me where I am today. Candlemaking isn’t as easy as it seems. There’s a lot of testing and trial and error. I’ve wanted to give up a few times, especially when I returned to my job, but this endeavor has never been about the money. It’s about purpose. I’ve always pondered on the question, “what do you want to leave behind?” Altruistic Love Candle Company is my legacy, and my mission is to encourage peace, love, and purpose in our everyday lives through home fragrance.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but is anything ever? In the beginning, testing different waxes, finding the right formula, and choosing the right wicks were the hard parts. I tried so many different wicks and combinations of wax and fragrance oil. I’m positive I cried a few times thinking I had found the correct combination only for the glass to overheat within 2-3 hours or having a scent throw that was pretty much nonexistent. Burn testing is a beast, but it is so necessary. You figure it out eventually, and the reward is worth the trouble.

Within the last year, supply chain disruptions and glass shortages have been a huge issue. The cost of wax has gone up tremendously, and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. Wicks and candle containers are constantly out of stock. It’s also more expensive to ship things these days. Operating a small business is hard and doing it in this economy is even more difficult.

Managing a small business, working full-time, and trying to keep a social life is an ongoing challenge I’m navigating. I’ll have to follow up with an update once I figure it out.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to keep growing and evolving. I want to continue to expand my footprint in the United States, and get my products on shelves or tables inside of other small businesses. I’m planning to add more products to my assortment, attend a few markets, and hone in on custom packaging.
