Hi Alfie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Rowan Hall Interiors began as a happy accident, born out of a need for creativity and connection. When my children were young, I needed a hobby to get me out of the house, so I opened a small gift shop at Southern Market in Knoxville, Tennessee. Customers loved the way the shop was styled, and soon they began asking for help with their own spaces. What started as picking accessories and styling bookcases quickly grew into a passion for interior design.

I had the guidance of an aunt who was a professional interior designer, and with her support, I started taking on small projects. Although I had no formal training, I relied on my natural eye for design, voracious reading, and learning through every opportunity. As my children grew older, I dedicated more time to the business, hired a team, and began taking on larger, more complex projects. Today, Rowan Hall Interiors is a full-service interior design firm working on everything from selecting finishes for new builds to furnishing 10,000-square-foot homes across the country. It’s been a remarkable journey of growth and transformation, and I couldn’t be more grateful for where we are today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not—like any journey, this one has had its share of bumps along the way. When I started, resources and mentorship for new designers were limited, and I often felt like I was figuring it out as I went. While my aunt was a fantastic resource, the lack of a broader design community made the learning curve steep.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the creative side of interior design with the operational demands of running a business. I may know how to design a beautiful space, but being a CEO, HR manager, and marketing director all at once? That’s a different story. Learning how to navigate hiring, managing employees, and budgeting while maintaining the creative heart of the business has been a constant challenge—and a significant area of personal growth.

Even now, the interior design industry evolves constantly, requiring adaptability and a commitment to learning. Despite these struggles, every challenge has been an opportunity to refine my skills, grow my business, and deepen my passion for what I do.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis taught us to adapt in ways we never imagined. First, it showed us just how much work could be done remotely. Zoom became our best friend, FaceTime allowed us to communicate effectively with contractors on-site, and mailing samples became second nature. These tools significantly reduced travel time, making our processes more efficient.

The pandemic also broadened our reach. Suddenly, working with clients and collaborators across the country felt seamless. During this time, I worked with a business coach in the Midwest, a remote assistant in the Philippines, and a designer in Canada. This period emphasized that our industry isn’t limited by geography, and we embraced opportunities to expand our footprint nationally.

Another silver lining was the sense of community that emerged among designers. Biweekly mastermind meetings with peers became a source of support and inspiration. It reminded me of the power of connection and collaboration, even in challenging times. Finally, Covid-19 highlighted the importance of financial preparedness. Having reserves in place helped weather the storm, ensuring the business remained steady through the uncertainty.

The Paint Color Consultation is perfect for choosing the best hues to complement your home, factoring in lighting, surroundings, and your personal preferences. Both consultations are often held on-site, but they can also be virtual or a mix of both, especially for clients relocating to Knoxville or surrounding areas.
