Exploring Life & Business with Thomas Loose of Thomas Loose Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Loose.

Hi Thomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started photography in kind of an accident. My brother stated he wanted to go to The Chicago Art Institute and was asking our parents to help pay for it. I told him instead of wasting all the money on schooling, he should just buy himself a camera and go to my favorite place for knowledge, YouTube University (Youtube.com).

To show him it was possible, I borrowed my stepfather’s camera and went online to learn as much as I could. After hours and hours of the video after video, I figured I knew what to do and set out to the local community park. This is where I first learned the basics of photography. I took the photos home and loaded the sd card into the slot. Loading the photo’s into lightroom and over-editing every single one of there (As we all do the first time around).

From there I bounced and learned product photography while I sold things on eBay, car and motorcycle photography as I was out and about in day-to-day situations and several other types of photography.

During the covid-19 shutdown, I learned lighting and got my first lighting kit. I learned this so I could record videos for YouTube, although I didn’t know how much I would use it in my future endeavors.

When I moved from Michigan to Tennessee, I was working full time at a local factory 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week, for 21 days straight. My family pushed me to find a job where I would be home more and more time for my children. This is where I applied at Four Sisters Old Time Photo in Pigeon Forge, TN.

I started in sales but quickly moved into the photography role. I learned photo compositions, customer interactions, lighting, photo editing, and the major parts of running a successful business from a great mentor in the owner. I quickly mastered each area and became one of the top producing photographers in the studio.

I found myself loving my job but wanting more. Most women who came in from of my camera hated how they looked because “It isn’t how I’m supposed to look” or “I’m not pretty”. This upset me dearly, as I came from a family who taught us to love ourselves for who we were and how we looked, no matter what everyone else thought.

So one day on while scrolling videos, I ran across this YouTube channel, Michael Sasser. He was a California photographer who specialized in Boudoir. His mission in life was to make women feel beautiful and love the skin that they were in by giving them amazing photos of themselves.

This intrigued me so much that I started taking photos of my girlfriend. When I saw the smile on her face after seeing the photos, and the more she showed them off, I knew what I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life.

So I rented a studio in Knoxville, The Knox Exchange, got an Amazing Hair & Make-Up artist in Beauty With Kristen, and found 3 ladies who wanted to be models for the day. They had no modeling experience.

As they arrived I introduced my staff and myself and went over the basics of the shoot. Letting them know that I would talk them through and demonstrate each and every pose so that way they knew exactly what to do. If they ever had a question they could ask. Let them pick the music, and drink a small glass of wine as Kristen did an amazing job with their make-up.

As of right now, I am currently booking up the rest of the year and pushing as much as I can to gain traction in the Knoxville and surrounding area.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, I’m a male Boudoir Photographer. So the struggles started instantly. Most women think men get into the boudoir for all the wrong reasons. I have to prove myself right off the back.
