Exploring Life & Business with Joe Cox of Friendly Neighborhood Plumber LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Cox

Hi Joe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our journey with Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has been one of perseverance and determination. I have been working in the plumbing industry for six years, gaining valuable experience with various companies. However, it was a spontaneous decision that led me to start my own business. One evening, while my fiancée Abi and I were watching Game of Thrones, she took the initiative to fill out the information to start an LLC. Within minutes, Friendly Neighborhood Plumber was born in January 2023.

Originally from Florida, I moved to this area during my high school years and attended Bearden High School. Today, Abi and I proudly share a blended family, raising three incredible children: an 8-year-old, a 6-year-old, and our youngest, Lyla, who is 1 year old. In fact, we affectionately refer to our daughters as our little plumbing apprentices. They often tag along to events and sometimes join us on jobs, creating a sense of togetherness in our work and family life.

Our journey has not been without its challenges, particularly during the early days of establishing FNP. Abi was pregnant with Lyla and due in April when we embarked on this entrepreneurial endeavor. However, the pregnancy proved to be incredibly difficult, leading to a complicated delivery and Lyla being born premature at 34 weeks. Consequently, Abi was in and out of the hospital for three months. Despite these immense challenges, we remained resilient. During those trying times, I stood by Abi’s side, cared for our daughters, and simultaneously worked towards building our new business. It was the unwavering support from our loved ones and our faith that carried us through those tough moments.

In the past six months, our business has flourished as we established valuable connections with other local small businesses. These partnerships have significantly contributed to our growth and success. We feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities we’ve been given, and we’re excited about what the future holds for Friendly Neighborhood Plumber.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. One of our biggest challenges was Abi’s pregnancy and the early birth of our daughter, Lyla. As I mentioned before, Abi’s pregnancy was complicated, and Lyla was born at 34 weeks, leading to several months of hospital visits. Balancing the demands of a new business while supporting Abi and taking care of our children was incredibly challenging.

Beyond that, neither Abi nor I had ever been business owners before, so there was a steep learning curve. Learning how to run a business has been and continues to be a challenge. The book The E-Myth talks about how people often excel as technicians but struggle with the organizational aspects of running a business. That resonated with me. I love plumbing, but the administrative and organizational tasks required to grow the business were initially overwhelming. I wouldn’t say I “suck” at it; rather, I’m continuously learning and improving. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who have guided me along the way, helping me become more well-rounded as a business owner.

Another significant challenge has been maintaining a work-life balance. It’s tough to ensure that I’m providing the best service to our customers while also being present for my family and creating lasting, loving memories with them. Balancing these responsibilities is a constant juggling act, but with the support of my family and mentors, we’re making it work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk is a constant presence in business, but it’s all about how you manage it. The key is to mitigate risk by staying prepared and keeping pressure low. Despite our best efforts, there are always elements beyond our control that can increase risk and pressure unexpectedly. As the saying goes, “Anything that can happen, will happen.” We’re always aware of this and strive to be ready for any eventuality.

We embrace risk-taking as an inherent part of our entrepreneurial journey. From the spontaneous decision to start our company to the daily choices we make to grow and innovate, risk-taking is a fundamental aspect of our business approach.

The initial leap into entrepreneurship was undoubtedly a significant risk for us. Without a detailed plan or extensive resources, we relied on sheer determination and belief in our abilities to make Friendly Neighborhood Plumber LLC a success. There were moments, especially in the beginning, when financial returns were not as high as we had hoped, and we faced uncertainties about the future. However, it is during these challenging times that our resilience and faith in our vision guide us forward. As we often say, “You have to risk it for the biscuit.” Our ability to take these risks stems from faith and a belief that, with dedication and hard work, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way.

In essence, our view on risk-taking is that it is essential for growth and progress. We acknowledge that taking risks allows us to seize new opportunities and push our limits, ultimately leading to personal and professional development. While there is uncertainty in every risk we take, we approach it with mindfulness, careful consideration, and faith in the support we receive from our loved ones and our community.

We believe that risk-taking is a vital component of entrepreneurship, and it is through these experiences that we learn, adapt, and continue to build our business.
