Exploring Life & Business with Amanda Burg of Liberty Type

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Burg.

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This business started accidentally! At the time, I was a news editor and journalist and really looking for a way to be creative. I started playing around on my laptop, designing logos for fictitious companies – until I realized I was staying up until all hours of the night. I started small, with an Etsy shop selling premade logos and small branding packages to small businesses. I figured if I was going to spend all of my free time doing this – I should at least try and make some money. I made my first sale just 3 days after launching and never looked back.

Less than a year into starting my business, my son was born, and everything *clicked*. If I invested the time and resources into this business, I could contribute to my family *and* be a stay-at-home mom.

Over time, we’ve naturally added services that felt relevant and that our clients have asked us for. Today, we are a full-service creative agency offering brand identity design, copywriting and messaging, website design and development, and marketing services.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The bad has never outweighed the good. I continue to be incredibly humble and grateful every time we book another client and have the opportunity to work with a new business owner or a new industry.

Being an entrepreneur comes with its own set of challenges, the biggest I’ve noticed is becoming the person capable of the success you want. Growing from a solopreneur that freelances to managing a full-time team at a creative agency has been an amazing, whirlwind journey with so many lessons along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Liberty Type. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Liberty Type is a creative and branding agency based in Maryville. We specialize in getting small business owners on brand and helping them stay on brand once they’ve launched. We have expertise in brand design and strategy, copywriting, and website design and love serving our clients with a white-glove experience from start to finish. We’ve worked with nearly every industry imaginable and we love bringing our client’s vision to life.

After serving 200+ businesses since 2016, we realized many of our clients were struggling to keep their branding consistent and cohesive after going live. So we launched Creative Liberty Club – a monthly membership that allows business owners to pay one monthly price, get the exact amount of support they need, and have a creative team in their back pocket all year long. We help business owners ditch expensive VAs, stop the DIY cycle, and prevent them from waiting months to get on a designer’s calendar. This club puts small business owners back in the driver’s seat and takes all the stress and mess out of looking great online. It is brand new in the space and we’re so incredibly excited and proud to finally solve this issue for our clients.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to launch before you’re ready! There isn’t a final destination or a point B, and the best way to achieve all the success you want is to get started right away. The faster you launch your business, the faster you can make tweaks, get clients, and learn and grow.
