Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Bowerman
Hi Alexandria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My son Derrick passed away one day shy of 2 months old in a sleep related accident. He was in the care of a trusted family member. The adult allowed a minor to card for Derrick unsupervised, and they were unaware of what safe sleep for an infant looked like. Safe infant sleep is against our instincts. Derrick has brought so much awareness into my life, and I share it with others through my non profit, Derrick Stone Safe Sleep. Our mission is to eliminate accidental infant loss by spreading awareness of the dangers of an unsafe sleep environment and share education on how to prevent a sleep related accident.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a paved path. I would call it more than just rocky. The pain is so deep, and though I love honoring him and helping others, nothing will ever replace my Derrick.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Derrick Stone Safe Sleep finds unique ways to reach the community from sibling, teen, parents, and grandparents engagement. We want everyone to be aware of the risk of an unsafe sleep environment and how to prevent a sleep related accident. I’m very proud of our approaches and how they include everyone. We are always looking for new ways to reach the community and would love to connect.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Derrick was strong, smart, silly, and of course so sweet. He sparked a light in my life that will never dim. I carry Derrick as if he is on my hip, and put so much love into each and every protect and event. As a bereaved mother, my best looks different everyday but I love to be transparent hoping that it sparks something in others.
